300 weatherby

I inherited my dad's west German made mark 5 300 weatherby mag. The chamber and barrel have shot its last rounds. Completely done.

Going to be taking it to a gunsmith to give it new life. Any one have a 6.5 300 or a 270 weatherby mag ? Pros and cons ? How about any 28 nosler owners ?

Not a big fan of recoil but With the Weatherby i can make it into anything with a magnum boltface. 300-6.5, 7 mag, 27-28-30 Nosler, 300 PRC, etc.

I have 2-300wby a 257 why and 270 why msg.
The 270 is my go to gun shooting 140gr Accubond! It has put down loads of animals over the last 20 years! It's a tack driver as well!!

Cool, what distance on each in Africa. Any tracking required?
Shots on both were about 100y give or take. Both animals traveled about 30y after the shot. The kudu was in such thick jungle he was tough to find. Our tracker climbed a tree to get a better look and the kudu was dead under the tree about 15' away from the base of the tree.

The 300 wby is my big game and long range gun and it has also laid down a many animals from African Dieker, Springbuck up to Zebra and Eland! I would stick with 1 of those calibers!

A good friend has a 300 Weatherby. I recall shooting it the first time. I braced for some heavy recoil and was instead, very surprised at how easy it was to handle. I enjoyed that caliber a lot. I will eventually own my own, but I'm holding out until my budget and the right Mark V comes along at the same time.

How far have you taken deer and elk with it ?

Scope set up ?
Wolfe78-
300Wby—676 on Elk, 534on Gemsbok and 522 on Deer.
270 Wby 519 on Elk and 486 on Deer
Both rides are set up with Nightforce NXS 5.5-22X50 scopes with ballistic turrets. A G7 BR 2500 ballistic rangefinder confirms range and ballistic adjustments at various altitudes and weather conditions.

If recoils an issue do not get a 65 300 I have both and the 65 300 will knock your toupee off. Does the West German gun have a break
keep it as a 300

I know I commented above but if you were definitely interested in changing the caliber, consider doing a seven Weatherby but with a faster twist because that will kick the snot out of every 7 mm out there.
Speed plus higher bc bullets. Wooohaaa

I'm a Weatherby nut and have them all from the 240 to the 338-378. Most are on the second or third barrel. If you're wanting to shoot it without a brake, you can't beat the 257 with the 92 grain Hammer Hunter. With H1000 or H4831SC you'll near 3700fps and it'll be a laser beam to 400yds and will be a pleasure to shoot. There are many other opinions above the 257 and I would recommend (if you want to see impacts), have the barrel threaded to use a brake. I would also have the rifle you have posted to be be pillar bedded and consider an after market trigger. For a minimal cost, it's more than worth it if you are wanting exceptional accuracy.
