I inherited my dad's west German made mark 5 300 weatherby mag. The chamber and barrel have shot its last rounds. Completely done.

Going to be taking it to a gunsmith to give it new life. Any one have a 6.5 300 or a 270 weatherby mag ? Pros and cons ? How about any 28 nosler owners ?

Not a big fan of recoil but With the Weatherby i can make it into anything with a magnum boltface. 300-6.5, 7 mag, 27-28-30 Nosler, 300 PRC, etc.

My father has a 270 weatherby mag and i must say that it shoots very well and recoil is very mild. Pleasure to shoot. No experience with 6.5/300 but I do with the 7/300 weatherby.

My best friend and I have 3 6.5 -300 wby's he shoots everything with his. I like mine as well. I just like to tinker. But overall very happy with mine. It's due for a new barrel soon as I was not easy on it

How many rounds through your barrel ?
And what's the longest shot and game he's taken with his ?

I like the idea of less recoil than the 300 weatherby View attachment 404911 mag
I understand it is not for everybody, but a muzzle brake or suppressor will mitigate the recoil. I am not recoil-sensitive, but almost all of my rifles sport a muzzle device from .25 to .33 cal. I had my first Weatherby chambering in .257. It is primarily for suppressed and built to propel the heavies 131, 133, 135, and 145. It has a 1:7" for the monos if I opt to use them.

Whichever chambering you decide, ensure you have the right barrel twist to stabilize the bullet(s) you will use. Good luck with your project build,

His is an elk at 467. He shot a coyote at 7 something. I've shot mine out to 1147 yards on smaller sized steel. We both have shot over 15 animals deer, elk and antelope with ours between us ranges from 290 being the closest and his coyote at 7 something. As to my barrel I'm at just over 500 rounds.

Good info. I have a pre 64 model 70 in a 264 I inherited as well. For that reason I might go with a larger caliber on the weatherby. With the Weatherby i can make it into anything with a magnum boltface. 300-6.5, 7 mag, 27-28-30 Nosler, 300 PRC, etc.

That's the beauty of having plenty of choices. Is there a void you are trying to fill with your current inventory? A few years ago, I was going to build a .300 RUM, but at the time, there was a shortage of brass. I went with a wildcat instead.

I have a ruger youth 243, tikka t3x 270 win, tikka t3x 30 06, remington woodmaster 06, and a pre 64 mod70 264 mag, and savage 300 I really enjoy the 270. With the 300 weatherby it Will be first time ever doing a "build" on a gun so I'm reading up as much as I can. I do reload so that helps because I'm sitting in a lot of brass and components.

.24 - .243
.25 - void
.26 - .264 WM
.27 - .270 Win
.28 - void
.30 - -06, Savage 300 (not sure if this is a .300 WM or .300 Savage)
.33 - void

You have the ultimate choice of what void you are trying to fill.
