@mnoland30 shooting movers is based on knowing your TOF at the distance and using your reticle to measure it's speed it's really not that hard at moderate speeds, full sprint is a completely different game

It doesn't always work out that way, But the first shot, you should make it a good one. Work on making one shot kills. It's a lot easier to pass up a shot than chase the animal all day and lose it. Like the one person said. If it don't feel right don't shoot.
I made a running shot on a black back Jackel a few years back. It was about 75 yds away. The people were working on taking them out of there area of operation. In talking to others a few years before that. They said: to lead is to swing through the animal. butt, chest, head., and once you pass the nose shoot. it worked.
The other was, and I did the same thing at an wounded elk (not by be either) at about 300 yds or so. I was worried as hell what the lead was needed to make the hit. It put is down with a heart shot. Lucky yes, skill some. I didn't want to spend the day tracking that cow elk. I did that the day before, because of somebody else poor shooting., I don't like running shots, and I will do that if the animal is wounded already. Poor practices, and stupid too to try a running shot.

I got into a big foofaraw with some of you guys about shooting at game out to 700 yards I think it was. I came away from that thinking that most of you were a bunch of yahoos and decided to stick with the reloading faction which is why I joined in the first place. I am pleasantly surprised to hear the responses to this thread. Maybe it's just a few yahoos here after all!
Personally, I will say what I will do based on my experience, background, knowledge and comfort level with the situation being discussed. That does not mean that someone else doing it different is wrong, unethical, not to be trusted, unsafe, a jackwad etc. These are value judgments and there are WAY more than enough people picking on hunters we sure as hell don't need to do it to each other. Provide your thoughts and experience but have the courtesy and respect to let others choose what is right for them. Someone impuning my character or calling me names has NEVER been a good way to get me to take or think seriously about the other advice they are trying to provide.

On big game I wait til it stops. I keep a mouth reed handy and a cow call quick chirp or mew will stop elk, deer, maybe moose? With deer, I have even whistled just to get them to pause and have heard of people doing it with elk also.

Just ask him the TOF of his projectile and the average speed of a moose on run, then what would be his target engagement strategy for a high probability of hit.
I think there are probably people who could make that shot with a decent probability of success. It doesn't sound like your buddy is in that club. Me either. Either way, it sounds like a recipe for disaster. As others have said, why take the risk.
A standing 800 yard shot from a stable position is probably easier for most people than a running 100 yard shot, depending on wind. But, not with a .308…… not on game anyhow.

I am an Eastern hunter and most of what we have is private farms (not western ranches) and National Forest. Farms are all working farms and National Forest can get pretty crowded with some sections having Appalachian Trail winding through. Most shots are under 200 yds, but I would never take a chance on a running deer. I worry about the animal, but I couldn't live with myself if I shot someone I didn't see!
