Runnig moose shoot?

Hi everyone,

Had a deffrent opinion on one question with a shooting buddy of mine.

We shoot out to 600yds with 308 as much we can and feel confortable to hit up to that distance on game.

The trick is that now is say that he will take shoot at à running moose at 400yds if he see one will hunting... with is 308 20inch bull barrel cause groupe wont open on 6 round like à regular hunting barrel will do....

No practice on mouving target at any range with rifle... and no pratice with shotgun at clay target to...

Told him he was crasy to risk that kind of shot at game if he dosent have try it on target first.

I wont event think at a shot like that with my 338win or my 7mm mag...

Running moose at 400yds... Is it me that is to shy?

It's like my Dad used to tell me when I was a kid. If you have to ask yourself if something might be wrong in a situation, then there's a good chance it probably is. I think a running shot at a moose at 400 yards would fall under this category.

It not like you have done first shot on a stand still moose and you go for follow up shot. Évent there ir the first shot is wel placed you might not have time forva second one

Your right buddy.
We do inflict pain when we shoot animals but with a good shot it's a quick kill hopefully.
I have seen a wounded elk shot poorly and lingered for close to a week before the hunters caught up with that animal and put it out of it's misery.We owe it to the animals we hunt to do everything we can to make a quick humane kill.
Thats the way I see it.

In my mind, if im not sure about let the first shot go im not shooting, dont whant to hurt animal for à bad call on my side

I knew better when I was 15 yrs old . My first chance too kill a 11 point buck , was when he ran behind some does , I had my 6.5 Swedish carbine aimed and just before I took the second stage out of the trigger ,my good judgement said no . The next morning at the crack of daylight , same day of the assassination of President Kennedy , I killed my first 11 point buck standing broadside at 80 yds .Good judgement pays off , bad judgement , causes problems. I ve hunted that way ever since , that's the way I was taught and that is what I preach and teach.

Not sure how fast a moose can run,but that would be in the vicinity of 24 feet of lead. Then you would have to have perfect follow through. Don't know what the FOV is in his scope,but if it's a running shot he won't have time to dial in elevation.

Not impossible, but very improbable. My vote is no.

A .308 is not a 400yd moose gun IMO. I wouldn't use it for a sleeping moose.

Although I'm sure someone will post that they take moose at 800yds with their Creedmoor.
