AR 10 DPMS feeding issues

Refer to the link below in gear report for a though troubleshooting process for an ar10/15. Starts with the magazine and progresses to other components that impact cycling such as buffer springs, proper gas pressure, ejector malfunctions as well as ammo quality to produce sufficient charge to cycle. May also want a qualified gunsmith to check for proper head spacing. I always try to match the bolt and barrel to the same mfg.

Again, Thanks. I read through that thread. Lots of good information. I'll take it slow, and research what I don't understand. I've already gained a wealth of information, here, and as they say, knowledge is power. Today, it shot well. Who's to say wether it's "fixed" or not.

you are on the right track to research each component to determine the best way to tune the bolt cycling. For instance, there are different buffer weight and spring options to counter gas blow back properties for carbine, mid length and rifle barrel configurations. Ignore the advertisement for particular proprietary products at the end of the article.

Who's the manufacturer of those red around the primer bullets? The reason I asked is because they are hard on decapping pins. As in bending them. I was given a bag of them to prep for reloading and gave up. Garbage just like steel cases.

You might also want to read up on ATF laws pertaining to 80% lowers. I don't mess with them. If I made one I can't sell it or even give it away. Actually in many states they recently passed laws about not being able to use home made weapons.... Ghosts

Took my AR 308 out for a ride today. Absolutely flawless functioning. Adjusting the feed lips of the magazine fixed the malfunctioning. After reading some more, thinking some more, and processing everything you all said here, I believe it to be somewhat overgassed , so I ordered a heavier buffer. It has a 3.8oz carbine buffer. I'm upping it to an H3 weight, with spring. Thanks again, folks.

Really glad the mag lips tweak worked out! AR308's can be a REAL pain in the *** to time out. My 2 cents: Get the gun mostly broke in and running smoothly so you can be sure all is well before moving on to any further adjustments. Take good notes on everything you do and change so you will know exactly what you have done. If something doesn't provide expected results, review the notes and work back. A little $$ tip here: KAK sells buffer kits that let you setup your own desired weights. And they are very reasonably priced. I used Sprinco springs. Moderately priced, but they are real good. I have over 16k rounds through one of my guns and not close to a new spring yet. When you fire it, what clock position are the cases landing at? 3-4 is great. 1-3 is over gassed. 4-5 is under gassed. But take this with a grain of salt. If you plan on using a suppressor or break, it will probably change the ejection pattern. Some brands of ammo may do this also. Some name brand ammo is loaded hot, some in the middle, and some get cheap on powder. I can't tell you how many times I thought I had a gun issue when it turned out to be an ammo issue. had a similar story with a 6.5CM AR-10. built it a while back, was working fine with several types of ammo, no mis-feeds, everything was hunky-dory, very reliable, shooting is fun. Got some S&B 140gr FMJ, and immediately got 10% failure to feed. tried 4 different mags, same occurrences. I think it has something to do with the bullet shape, the S&B projectile isn't as pointy as what I've been using (ogive?). Well, because ammo availability is limited, I bought a lot of the S&B, so I have to make it work.
I saw the pics in this thread earlier, about tweaking the mag feed lips, so I tried that on 2 metal mags. Went to the range this weekend, the first tweaked mag worked great. Tried the 2nd tweaked mag, the misfeeds are worse, like every other round. So now I need to compare the good mag with the mag that got worse, and figure out what the differences are. Might actually have to figure out how to get some relevant measurements on the feed lips.
At least I ended with 1 good mag that's reliable. I suspect the bad mag that went worse, I might have been over enthusiastic in the tweaking.

You sure the spring in the bad mag is good? That would be my concern if the lip tweak was the same on both mags, the spring is the only other variable. Or like you stated, might have "over tweaked" the bad mag. Chances are that the S&B ammo you got is the culprit if the gun ran fine with other make ammo. Worse case, tear down the S&B ammo and re-powder it with known type. Yeah I know thats a s#it show, but what else you gonna do? Good luck.

Couple things I learned after bending the lips...the mag needed to be deburred on the inside edge, as it was making real fine brass hair, cutting it off the cases. Also, it's difficult to get both sides of the stack the same. Got it close, tho.
Also learned that PPU ammo is pretty hot. Just the opposite of what I stated a few posts back. Magneto Speed says it leaves at 2850. And the ejected case pile agrees. They nearly all land at about 1:00. Also, 10 rds heats the barrel up....ALOT! In addition, the extractor seems to chinger up the rim a tiny bit, and not every single one.
These things are a hoot ! Don't know why I waited so long to add one to my safe .
