Scary Thought on Primers

Large pistol in large rifle leaves lots of opportunities for fail to fire as the firing pin won't reach the primer, due to it seating deeper into the pocket. Tested the idea and found my Winchester wouldn't fire the primers. Scrapped and just paid the $14 per hundred for large rifle at local shop :(

The dimension chart above is gold. Small Rifle and Small Pistol Primers and Primer Pockets all share the same dimension - this DOES NOT mean the primers are all "the same." Large Rifle Primers are "taller" than Large Pistol Primers and should never, ever be used in Large Pistol Primer pockets. Conversely, this dimensional difference allows Large Pistol Primers to be seated too deeply in Large Rifle Primer pockets...also a bad idea. If one MUST substitute a primer, first make sure the primer and primer pocket dimensions are compatible. Second....the load data will very likely change. (primers of the same type from different manufacturers) will typically affect load data in a measurable way. Know the load stats that you are going to replicate, in the gun in which you are replicating it - like the average MV and Velocity SD & ES - change the primer and only the primer, start with a 10% lower propellant charge and work up to match the MV and other stats. This is true for anytime a primer swap is made, but always pay extra attention to the dimensional differences between primers and primer pockets. Be safe out there!

Years ago I accidentally reloaded some 45 Colt Ammo using large rifle primers by mistake!
The cartridges would not fit my Ruger Vaquero or Marlin 1894 rifle.

So, here's a question I was asked that I had no answer for.

In this time of primer shortages, it's only a matter of time until someone substitutes a magnum large pistol primer for a magnum large rifle. Or a large pistol for a large rifle primer.

What will happen?

I was asked this question yesterday and had no answer. It never occurred to me🤔.

What say you gurus?
Anyone ever wonder why they make various primers? Maybe they need to be used as manufactured for.

I don't think there is a primer shortage. I have been able to buy primers every time I've needed them. I also think the risk of this type of substitution is no greater than it has ever been, much like all the other risks associated with reloading. None issue. However, the results could be very bad depending.

I substituted small pistol in 223 loads, they did seat deeper, tried 5, 1 blew hole in primer so that was the end of that, went and tried small pistol mag primers in 223, seated deeper, shot the same as small rifle primers, no issues.

Real question is WHY is there no primers after 2 years. Like the Russian people, that don't realize what is happening in Ukraine .
Same thing here! If you think the American factory's couldn't possibly produce enough primers in 2 years to keep up with demand then you must still believe there is a tooth fairy???? Our Government is directly involved in this.......they don't want you to have them.........simply as that. So if you voted for these clowns blame yourself NOT the primer manufacturer.
How stupid are American's getting.

Invictus,
WHERE can you buy LARGE Rifle primers today???? GunBroker at $100 per hundred?? There has not been a LR primer for sale in New England for year and a half???

There's a local shop here that has BR4 and BR2 primers for sale. $12.99/100. If I needed them I'd be in there buying them. They told me they had to pay a lot to get them there. They're only selling 2 boxes per customer per visit. It's hard for me to justify since I have LRP and SRP. Only buying 2 at a time takes the sting out of it though. I did buy 4 boxes of GMM Mag Pistol primers from them at two different visits, those were at $9.99/box, but I only had 200 primers for my 44 Mag sitting on my shelf. They're out there, somewhere, we have some here.

But are government has no problem arming the Taliban and now wants to buy oil from Iran, Biden motto, "make our enemies strong again, make Americans broke", I don't even talk to friends who voted for him cause now your politics is hurting me.

I had a message from someone in this thread but it wouldn't let me reply so here is my 5.7x28 load process. This is a picky little round to load for. I use a significant amount of Hornady one shot to prevent scraping the lacquer off. I'm normally not a fan of One shot on bottle neck cases but I have tried everything and it is the best for this round. When I size them I keep the round in the die for a full 5 seconds and then rotate it 180 degrees and size again for 5 more seconds. Sounds redundant and not ideal because it will likely shorten brass life but since doing this I have no rounds that won't chamber anymore. This round requires a pretty fair bullet crimp to function properly and get an efficient ignition so your brass must all be trimmed to the same length. When you seat your bullets do it very slowly or you will have issues with slightly compressing the case and it will not chamber properly. I use a chamber gauge or ammo checker from elite ammunition to check every loaded round to insure that it will properly chamber. You can use small rifle non magnum primers or small pistol magnum primers. I don't recommend standard small pistol because they are too soft and show premature pressure signs in this high pressure round. My favorite loads are below but remember this is a very safe load in my five seven pistol so please start lower and work up if you duplicate it. Also do not tumble your brass it will damage the coating and not function in an auto loading firearm. Just soak them in warm water with a little dawn dish soap for 20 minutes and lightly agitate with your hands and then dump them on a towel and dry them by rolling them between two towels. You can use a blow dryer on low heat to help but too much heat can damage the coating. I let mine sit for 24 hours before loading. They may still look a little dirty but after sizing and wiping the lube off they will be very clean because carbon doesn't stick to the laquer too bad. My load data

6.0 grains Longshot
1.58 COAL
32 grain controlled chaos bullet
CCI 550 small pistol mag primer
2050 fps from EFK 5.4 in barrel

5.7 grains Longshot
1.58 COAL
40 grain vmax
CCI 550 small pistol mag primer
1875 fps

Feel free to call me because this thing won't let me type anymore. My name is Alan 402-750-4592
