Why can’t Weatherby make a faster twist rate 7 mm barrel

I remember walking out of the timber once when a young lad with my mom after deer hunting and a grouse flew up and landed in a tree. Mom shot it with a 30-06 or 308 win, can't remember for sure, we found half the breast I think. She was aiming for the head at 10-15yds. Oops.
Well, I guess half a breast is better than no breast at all. I am still not sure that that blown-up grouse was "overkill." It was a waste of good meat, how is it overkill. I know, we are splitting feathers here, but dead is dead. I am still wondering about the true meaning of killing something too dead? Or is that not a valid question?

If the animal is dead but you failed to meet your objective, in my opinion, it's overkill! It's MY opinion! You don't have to agree with it and you can not change it

Wow!!! I wish I was that confident about things like this. I think I was born with an unsound mind. And I would never try and never want you to change your mind. I am just wound a different way.

If you think shooting a grouse that you want to eat, with a 30.06 and losing most of the meat, that's your choice! I don't have to agree with it. But I am not stopping you! You trying to tell me there is no such thing as overkill. Yep! We are wound differently! And that is what makes the world go round and round!
Peace, love and rock n roll!

Probably more like poor aim, but, years later I shoot a grouse with a 30-06 through the neck right below the head, left it attached and the grouse whole. Both parents laughed pretty good at that one. Bird was 30yds away.

I was hunting quail with a couple of friends in South Texas a couple of years ago. A bird flew infront of my friend, very very close, he raised his gun and fired...only thing left was a few feathers....bird was dead...nothing to eat.....objective was to get a bird to eat....annimal dead...failed objective...overkill...simple as that....

Excesses of both Testosterone and Adrenaline can be a bad thing. Growing up we didn't have a lot of money and basically shot nothing but Rem 870's with 30" bbls. We learned to literally shoot their heads of or not shoot at all till they hit at least 30 yards. Back then we did everything we could to recover everything we hit while maximizing edible meat because we had to.

Hunting blues in E. NM we'd shoot them in the head with 22's while they were feeding or roosting up around "the pens".

Glad I have more options now.

Totally agree
Great to have options...AMEN to that
I no longer hunt for trophies...but I have nothing against those who do
I eat or donate what I kill, unless its a varmint that I kill because the rancher or the county wants me to.
I only hunted in Africa because the meat was being donated...otherwise I would have done a photo or trangualizer safari
I am expressing my definition, it does not have to be anyone else's.
It is what I choose...

Paul Mauser designed the very FIRST 7mm ctg in 1892 for his Model 93 Mauser military bolt gun, arming the Spanish Army. l think the bullet weighed 178.2gr. Barrel twist was 1 turn in 8.66 inches. l think that is the standard for ALL 7mm chambered guns. ''Adequate'' is loose term that means ''opinion''. WDM Bell used his little 275 Rigby/7x57 to kill app 800 Elephants and a few train loads of buffalo/Lions/tigers. He considered the 7x57 ''adequate'' using 178gr fmj military ammo almost exclusively. He actually preferred an even smaller 256 Rigby/6.5x55.
Killing maybe 150 elephants with it. He settled on 7mm because the military ammo was more reliable and available.

I hunt Africa first because I was invited and second because from the first time I watched Hatari as a kid and some similar movies I had a burning desire to see it.

As a rule I want to shoot the oldest animals possible and as you say, nothing edible or useful in any way is wasted and I know I'm enriching a lot of lives along the way.

I have never really hunted for trophies, that is why the mounted deer on my wall are nowhere near record book animals. I make my deer and feral hogs into sausage that I smoke and keep it to myself until I can send some home with friends. I have been making sausage for about 55 years, and I am good at it. Cooking is one of my only talents. I have a police friend that sometimes took about 30 or 40 pounds to the old folk's home where his mother lived. I got many thank you notes. It was a lot of fun.

I went back and reread this post. I have never killed anything with a 30-06. Started hunting deer and then hogs with a 7mm RM. Nowadays I use my 378 Bee or my .54 cal muzzleloader and my 460 S&W.
Out of state, over the fence, and farrrrm out!

I have an older 7 wby mag that shoots awesome with 140, 145 and 150 gr bullets. Not so much with the heavier grain bullets. I feel if Weatherby change the twist rates on some of their barrels they would now be able to compete with some of the newer calibers being offered. If seven whether we had a better choice rate and could punch have your grain bullets out it would dominate and illuminate the need for 65 PRC 65 gap 65 anything. Don't get me wrong I love my 65 300 Wirelesss Weatherby is the cats meow.
I had Shilen rebarrel my Mark V Deluxe about 20 years ago to shoot 160 gr bullets. They installed one of their hand lapped stainless steel barrels. I cannot recall the twist rate but, it'll shoot 160 gr Nosler Partitions and Accubonds into a ragged hole at 100 yds all day long. That was the best money I ever spent on that rifle.

Maybe you should read post #42 and your comment on post #43
And with that said, I am done on this subject
