Depending on which chart reference you look at, the WTBY has + ~4 grains advantage over the Rem Mag. Having said that, I'd pick the Rem Mag --- more choices in brass and better priced ... but that's just me. If I'm building it, I'd have a 1:8" barrel at 26" for soon to be available 195 Berger VLD.

In my opinion, the 7mm Wby's velocity gains over a standard 7mm RM is not worth it. While both calibers have their own cult following, I myself lean toward the RemMag. My own personal bias. I do not have anything against Weatherby calibers.

There are plenty of folks pushing 7mm RM rifles to similar velocities as the 7mm Wby. My cartridge program says that the Weatherby holds 4.3 grains more powder than the Rem Mag. The Wby, while slightly faster, is handicapped by brass and factory ammo availability and diversity. Especially when it comes to cost. 7mmRM factory ammo and brass is quite plentiful, can be inexpensive, and even the top-tier stuff costs significantly less than the Weatherby.

Weatherby brass costs $2.00 each vs. Nosler 7mm RM brass that costs about 1/2 that.

ab, the only Weatherby I would not own is the 7mm Wby. Not enough advantage over the Rem. I've seem the 7 Rem make some outstanding kills and like Mud said, the components are half the cost. I own several Weatherbys and will hunt with them till I'm dead, but their 7 is not on my wish list.

Between the two I'd stick with the 7mm Rem, it's just really hard to beat for what it is.

If you want more gas and a little extra class go with the 7mm STW.

I shot the Rem from about 1976 until I moved up to the STW in the 90's and it's one of the true "do it all calibers". A friend of mine put somewhere close to 40 elk and over a hundred deer in the freezer with the Rem in his hunting career most of which where shot between 400-850yds and everywhere in between.

I'm Weatherby biased but......

Go with the 7RM unless you need more like a STW or 28-Nosler.

Separate from the performance and cost aspects, but during the really tough days of the ammo shortage, I could find weatherby factory ammo and brass (on line ) when everything else was out. The local stores were down to 35 Whelan.

It made me really curious about a path that I had ignored.

I own one 7mm Rem (Sendero) and 3 7mm Wby Mark V's. I love the Weatherby, but I also have puchased a lot of brass for it over time. "Worth it" becomes a personal decision.

If I weren't such a Weatherby fan, I'd look at the 7mm Rem; however, my next 7mm will be a 28 Nosler.

Dr. Vette. evening, i am building a 7mmWbee 26" varmit contour barrel, Wbee

Barnes 150 TTSX over 75.0gr of H-1000 using Fed 215M primers.
COAL is just shy of magazine length.
This is what Dad's stainless shoots well.

One of my 7mm's shoots factory Accubond loads well and the other shoots factory Nosler Partition loads. My next goal is to try and "copy" those and replicate the accuracy.

The 7mm Rem isn't going anywhere in our lifetimes. Factory brass and ammo will always be available for them.

The 7mm STW doesn't seem to be going anywhere either. It's death has been pronounced several times but it just keeps coming back.

There are several consistent sources for factory ammo for the STW and as long as they are around you will always be able to get good factory ammo and brass.

A lifetime supply of brass for any bolt gun is around 500-1000rds. If you aren't loading too hot you can easily get 3-6 loadings on each of them so when you get that many saved up you have nothing left to worry about.

I've played with the 7's for a long time and the STW to me gives the maximum return. You can go with a bigger case to put more powder but you don't get much added velocity and pay for that little gain in velocity with significantly higher recoil and muzzle blast.

With the advent of the 28 Nosler, if I ever change from the STW it will probably be to it.
