CA deer bullet

I'm a public land hunter and unless I get drawn for a coveted tag I like to hike back to areas that don't see as much pressure. There really aren't a bunch of monster bucks where I hunt and shots are less then 300 yards. Have to use lead free bullets in CA. Usually carry my 270 with 130 grain Hornady GMX. This year I'm planning to use a new 308. So would you use a lighter 150 grain for the extra velocity, a larger 165 grain, or whatever the rifle shoots best (probably this option). But all things considered and if both bullets group equal do you see any advantage of the 150 vs 165?

There is no deer that is going to know the difference getting hit from a 165gr to a 150gr out of your .308, especially at those distances. Use witch one you can find and then the one that shoots the best. Don't over think it and worry yourself, its supposed to be fun. If you start stretching the distances in the future then you can start looking at the heavier bullets/higher BC bullets.

At your range speed rules the day. You should look at setting up Your rifle system for a max point blank range capability that would keep you holding center mass with no thought about hold over or drop compensation.

I assume you are shooting a 308 win. For your range I would set the rifle up with 124g Hammer Hunter or the 137g Hammer Hunter. Either of these would give you point blank range well beyond your 300y mark. Let me know if we can help you get set up.

I'm in California and set up with Hammers. I'm slinging a 152 hammer hunter in my 300 weatherby, and 124 hammer in my 6.5x284.
Hammer are great for California 100% copper

Run whatever you can find available and what shoots well in your rifle. No deer in CA will know the difference. I haven't seen any wardens who really care what you're shooting outside of the "condor range".

Totally agree. Most wardens that hunt (that I've talked to) don't like the law or the bullets/material we have to use but with my luck I would get caught by that one that does. I'll play it safe and abide by the law. Once I get farmilar with loading my own I plan on playing with the Hammer bullets but I am just beginning down the rabbit hole of reloading so this year I'll probably shoot factory ammo with Barnes or GMX.

Get a good loading manual and read it. Get a basic kit. I will help however I can. Feel free to call.

What you're shooting works fine, but the hammers are excellent bullets.

you might even shoot better with those lighter bullets and less recoil

I wouldn't trust a GMX to expand much below 2200 fps..

That's why I limit my shoots to 300 yards with the 308. Having to use lead free I want velocity to be a min 2000+.

When I start "rolling" my own ammo I absolutely will but I am still collecting parts and knowledge on reloading
