Hello everyone I'm about to drop off a Remington 700 long action To my smith to be built into a lightweightish .280 Ackley Improved hunting rifle. I'm having extreme difficult picking out a stock for it. I'm looking for a hunting style stock and want to not stray far from a sported style or Monte Carlo type design. It will have a sporter contour barrel and will be topped with a Nightforce scope with 30mm tube and 50mm objective. My issue is that i really would like to have a stock that I can get a really good cheek weld with but not have to add a Riser or shoot a target style stock. Can you guys give me some suggestions on some stocks that would fit what I'm searching for? I was looking at the McMillan Sako Hunter stock but unsure if the stock would provide proper cheek weld. Please include pictures of your rifles if you have them handy. Thank y'all so much for your knowledge and advice!

My Sako hunter stock , it works well with a Zeiss 1 inch tube.I am not sure how it will work with your nightforce. You might look into the Mcmillan hunter stock Manners also makes a similar stock EH2 .Stock fitment also varies with the shape of your head, cheek bones and eye location. Good luck .

I'd +1 the suggestion for an Altitude from Mesa Precision. I used to run a stock pack for better check weld before I got the Altitude. The tolerance of the comb height on mine (Tikka platform) is as high as you can get and keep bolt clearance.

I have a mcmillan hunter and really like it. I think it is certainly close to the sako hunter?

after a quick google it seems to just be a slight variation on the sako hunter so the floor plate and stock match up a little better on a 700 platform. Probably best to ask mcmillan though

mine has a #4 barrel and a NXS 5.5-22x50 so sounds a lot like what you're going for

Lightweight-ish build, yet a 30mm tube and 50mm objective?

Also note that the larger tube and objective will raise the scope compared to a 1 inch tube and/or 40-44mm objective.
I find the difference to be notable, and just installed a couple of 30mm scopes, including a 50mm objective, on rifles. I only used it because I already owned it, but would have preferred a smaller objective.

You will likely move from low/medium rings to high rings with this size optic.

Just food for thought.

McMillan HTG is my favorite hunting stock. Fits like a 700 BDL but with more verticle grip. The McMillan hunter is a very popular stock at my shop. Really nice palm swell and very full cheek. The Manners MCS is very similar to the HTG but I've never owned one so can't really say. But everyone who tries out my rifles with the HTGs on them they love it too. Kinda shows just how good the 700BDL was designed from the beginning. Heck everybody copies the 700 action too. I have a 30mm tube Zeiss v6 3-18 in medium Burris signature rings on my htg stocked rifle with a sendero lite barrel. The stock is perfect for that height scope for my face. I'm ugly so maybe it won't work for everyone.
Shep

Manners has all their specs on the site which will show you the drop at comb (front and rear). I went with the Eh6 and love it. I've got a 44mm objective mounted in low seekins rings. Issue is you could order now and maybe not have it by hunting season. The Mesa stocks posted here look good too.

I can use low Nightforce rings and it still has enough space to not contact the barrel. Sporter contour barrel
