I have a Remington Model 7 I worked up with a custom stock as my ideal whitetail companion since I retired my old faithful .308 600 Mohawk some years ago. I have taken over 40 deer with it, it's no burden to carry and easy to maneuver in the Eastern deer woods. I have been toying with the idea of a new dedicated varminter but can't shake the idea of using my deer rifle for all season practice. Trying not to spend any more money since planning retirement this in 2020. I plan on using my 2.5 - 7 power scope so I understand the limitations but that's half the fun too. What's working for those of you using Deer rifles on varmints to keep that trigger finger sharp?

That is one of the reasons I do a lot of hunting with my 7/08. It works for everything
that I normally encounter in Texas deer, hogs, turkey, coyotes, bob cats, fox, and if I have a pesky squirrel it will solve the problem. Distance is not a problem for any of these animals out to around 500 yards.

The 120 grain Ballistic tip has a thicker jacket than the 140s and with the extra velocity it can use it, on small game and varmints it doesn't expand as much and if you want the hides it doesn't damage them as much with a well placed shot.

It is a true drt cartridge for deer and hogs.

I use my one 7mm-08 for groundhogs . this rifle is set up as a long range rifle , A5 stock , NXS 5.5-22 . I shoot the Berger 140 VLD hunting bullets .

I agree with the other guys . the 7-08 is a good all around cartridge that I feel is underappreciated , it works better than most realize .

Shotshaper -

Howdy !

Not a 7mm, but.....

The .250-3000 was/is a proven dual-role' deer/varmint cartridge.

Sierra 75HP's made for a death ray on groundhogs, shot from a M-77 22" Sporter. The same rifle but w/ the longer 24" barrel Ruger also offered; would have been even better
( IMHO ). Latter -70's Ruger sales ads listed the .250-3000 under hunting rifle calibers they offered, and not under their varmint rifle calibre..... but again.... it was famous for doing both well.

Thanks for the replies guys. I have been using the Nosler 120 BT's for deer and they have all been DRT. My model 7 group's under an inch any day with my handloads. Haven't tried the Speer 110's but I'll grab a box and work up a load. I'm not recoil sensitive but softer recoil will facilitate follow-up shots if needed. My .308 model 600 Mohawk kicks like a valaparizo Jack-*** but I collected every animal I ever pointed it at except one. Interestingly the rifle I thought about building would have been a .25 cal. Maybe 250-3000 or 257 Roberts. Happy hunting.

Sorry for the Rule 4 Violation, momentary loss of consciousness. I was intending to describe a pain inflicting kicking mule, didn't even think of the other one. No offence intended.
