Remage conversions

They have a proprietary method they're pretty darned tight lipped about. It's said to create a super hard surface inside the bore so I'm betting there's some level of a button or hammer forging or both involved. My personal bet is that they cold hammer forge on a smooth mandrel which is undersize to the stated bore diameter and then run a button through for the rifling arcs. Look up Caudle 3-land rifling and you'll probably get what I'm drifting.

FYI, they're having a serious sale right now. It's 30% and you will need to call. A fully set up barrel from them with that discount is impossible to beat. You'll thank me.

Who is having a 30% off sale? (I've seen several different barrel sellers mentioned)

My story is like most here. I built my first remage last year- 7mm rem mag. I bought the action, barrel but, tools and barrel from Northland Shooters. Fun and easy build for sure. Working on 180 eld M loads now. Shoots 175 ELD X @ 0.4 over 68.9 grains of H1000. I will build more for sure. Do it. It's fun

The thing that's nice about that setup is, you can adjust and play with the head space which really changes the dynamics of the rifle. Which in effect can tighten the groupings, I have noticed that the smaller calibers I can run a really tight head space, and the larger calibers 70gr of powder plus need some breathing room. Some will say that increases brass flow, well let me tell you that with the way I load the brass will flow whether it wants to or not. Hey let's not kid ourselves brass has a limited lifespan regardless how you treat it, so I load it like I am mad at it, I have a shooting buddy that has a 6br I swear he keeps round robin them till he gets 30 or more firings out of them, something is defiantly wrong with that child.

I think I read they have 5 "groove" also, do you have a preference?
Seems like a great idea, less gas cutting, tighter dimensions, less jacket distortion. Are their barrels faster than a conventional barrel?

I have both. Personally I don't see the need for a 5-land but that's just because I have not encountered said need yet. 3-land are what Carl recommends. I happened into the 5-land barrels on a super deal and picked up a bunch of them.

As far as being faster. Yeah, they've always been a little faster than enfield barrels of equal quality and twist. It's nothing major normally. I got 50fps-80fps more from the CRA barrel in 6XC (depending on the load) with all else being as identical as possible (length, twist, etc..) in recent testing. It must be noted that the big difference between the CRA barrels and the other (a Shilen select) was the chamber I had set up on the CRA barrels was much tighter.

All my Remage or Savingtons as I like to call them, have all been machined by a gunsmith, with blanks from various barrel MFG who ever had the blank that I wanted at the time. I tell you what he is never bored with the stuff I come up with.

Exhibit C
It's just like a 308 only with twice the powder.LOL

You can't see it due to the stupid photo bucket Icon but it does say 17 twist.

I know it's not a quick change I'm just tired of waiting 10 months for a good smith to install a barrel. Or getting a rifle that has .012 too much headspace. I also like the idea of just doing it myself, I have patience but no lathe or money to buy lathe much less learn how to use one.
10 months for a barrel install!? I turn chambering jobs around in 4-6 weeks! The only hang-ups are either getting the desired barrel or the desired 'special' reamer from the maker. I have 82 finish chambering reamers in my tool storage, now! But many want something 'different'.

Don't have a lot of good Smith's in MS. I'm sure the parts were the slow part last time, but their popularity is growing down here.

i am thinking of doing a remage build and am going to get the barrel from preferred barrel blanks
Let let us know how it does......my Valkyrie has been doing great! Tying to hit accuracy with ~3000fps. Thought touching the lands was ticket for the 80eldm's but idk trying to get both is hard.

I first dove into the "barrel nut", self installation practice as a result of getting into PRS. High volumes, and summer temps radically increased the process of barrel replacement. While the work was generally superb, the time, cost, and inconvenience of using a gunsmith was problematic for me so I decided to give them a try. I was initially skeptical about performance, but was pleasantly surprised.. Using Bighorn and Savage actions with Northland/Criterion barrels, I will say that the results have been beyond my expectations with performance easily comparable to my shouldered premium barrels. James at Northland was very helpful! I have since begun using the barrel-nut systems with my hunting rifles with comparable success and convenience. I do plan on giving the Rem-age system a try as well.
