Fluted Carbon Fiber Barrel

Does the carbon fiber add any positive effects to the barrel or is it strictly aesthetic.
I've seen carbon fiber ar barrels that claim to help with heat dissipation during rapid fire.
First fluted I've seen for sure

Just curious, why 300 WSM when you already had the 300 PRC? Not that "just because" has ever kept me from buying a new barrel or gun!

Also curious the velocity your getting with that 20" barrel and your suppressor. Great length hunting rifle though!

It is not machined. It is filament wound that way. The winding angle optimum is around 55 degrees. What is lacking are circumferential and longitudinal windings. Nothing more is really required. My business has been winding composites for decades though we do not wind rifle barrels or even pole vault poles. Beautiful work!

Why would a carbon fiber wrapped barrel be fluted?? Grinding through the fibers would weaken the CF wrap.
Are the "flutes" moulded in?
What is their purpose?

Seeing all the layers that have been cut through for the fluting makes me feel pretty certain that has lowered the stiffness of the CF wrap. But it's a good looking shaft.

Great question! My 300 PRC has a 28.5 inch barrel which with Suppressor gets pretty heavy and long. It's great for cruising west Texas ranches hunting Aoudad and Elk but not much fun in Colorado mountains in timber.
I have only fired 10 rounds of 185 Bergers and in that particular ladder top end was 2870fps.

That looks absolutely killer! I am curious how it will hold up and how the stiffness/cooking compares to a regular steel barrel, a fluted steel barrel, and a regular carbon wrapped barrel.

The Nightforce Beast was the scope that happened to be on the rifle with the 300 PRC/ 6.5 PRC barrels.
After I finish working up a couple different loads for it then a 2.5-10x42mm NF with IHR reticle will be used for actual hunting applications.

I am not sure what the poster who said it would be hard to clean means?
Maybe the pictures don't give you a good perspective but it's just a thick Carbon Fiber barrel with very shallow flutes. I don't have another 20 inch barrel to compare weight against but I bet it took less than 2-3oz off the weight.

Maybe if I insert this link again that has the picture of the barrel before the flutes were painted it will give a better idea of what we have here.

It's definatly a look think personally I like the look of it before it was painted. But that's the thing people like different things wouldn't it be booring if we only had 1 rifle to choose. I'd just be worried that the carbon could chip off easier. However if it is laid that was as mentioned above its an Amasing job.

I'm with Wild Bill, I like it before the paint job but I grind cloth micarta and layered wood on fixed blade knives. The barrel already shows it has what it takes for now and who hasn't heard of a steel barrel being ruined getting fluted before all the info on stress relieving and so forth. I bet many here have some of those fancy tomato stakes... The way Proof throws and hammers barrels in the torture test I don't imagine it will chip. Having fun following...

Looks exactly like a paint job we do on chassis to match proof barrels. Lots of layers. The dark (black) spots have no shading. Looks like paint. Carbon's tensile strength comes from the continuous threads. Would you really cut one? The cut edges look far to clean to have been machined buy a cutter. (No thread ends or micro chipping) Think you'd have to grind the dimples in carbon. Regardless its very pretty. My vote is Steel - Or magic!!
