Need a new rifle -- Recommendations!

High velocity does not mean a better kill or flatter shooting. I have seen white rail shot with a 264 and the whole side blood shot . Energy and penetration. Quick kill. High BC is a major factor for lower drag and will have less drop even though slower and heavier bullets . Match twist to bullet weight to be used and intended use. If you plan to shoot bear, Elk etc 338 win mag. 300 win mag minimum . Get out the Berger loading manual or applied ballistic books. Like I have said 338 win mag drops them quick little damage to meat with proper loads.

"IF" you have the patience and time to watch the classifieds ads here, you can put together an excellent LR rig. Here's what I have done thus far on my .264 WM project as an example only:

$285 - Savage 111F LA - comes with 20 weaver pic rail and .250" aftermarket recoil lug
$ 95 - Choate ultimate varmint stock used in exc shape ($200+ new)
$430 - 26" X-caliber 1:7" 5R, 5/8-24" thread at the muzzle ($100 extra) prefit barrel
$120 - MBM 2-piece 4-port beast brake

NOTES:

- The Choate is too heavy for most but not for my intended purpose.
- LRH members Handler and grouse (I'm sure there are others too) frequently have them Savage actions for sale.

Good luck!

No 26 inch is available in just about all configurations. See them at Legacy Sports. Accuracy, and construction is far superior to Remington today.
My bro in laws family have purchased several howas recently - I think theirs come in some sort of combo with a scope. They all seem really happy with them though.

Same old arguments. We're discussing $800 rifles not best cartridges invented. OP says he's looking for a deer rifle in 7RemMag. I think a 24" is more than adequate. A Weatherby vanguard in stainless might be a good choice as well.

A 24" might be adequate, but why not find something with a 26" tube to lets it stretch its legs out a little? You are handicapping the cartridge if you go with a 24" barrel.

Thank you for the info. Now, do you know anything about the Savage line of things? At this point, I'm having a hard time -- Bouncing between Bergara (still) and Tikka T3X....
What I mean is that, people will always find flaws regardless of model/manufacturer. There is quite a few of us here that likes the Savage rifles/actions for what they are designed and there also others that do not care for them or absolutely hate them. Check out Savage Shooters forum and find out. I have a .270 AI with a custom 30" 1:8" Lilja barrel that is .5-.75 MOA at 1K yard (if I do my part) build for under $1K and I am currently building a .264 WM with 27" 1:7" X-caliber barrel for ~the same price.

FWIW If you are wanting a rifle for hunting out to 500 and steel at 1000 I still believe that the Bergara HMR would be a solid choice. You can't go wrong with just about any rifle mentioned already, however I do feel for the money that it's giving you basically 2 rifles. Not to heavy to hunt with and heavy enough to hammer steel. For me the hard part would be what round are you going to get for your rifle?

Also, it is exciting to see you stepped up and decided to make yourself the content police on this site...lol. Make sure you educate yourself on how to report content you don't agree with as well.

I think there was just some hesitancy with recent problems that have surfaced with the B-14's that were mentioned earlier in the thread with the bolt shroud and firing pin. Take those out of the equation and the Bergaras are tough to beat.

Warning! This thread is more than 5 years ago old.
It's likely that no further discussion is required, in which case we recommend starting a new thread. If however you feel your response is required you can still do so.
