in process of collecting components for a 338 caliber build currently have a stiller predator long action magnum and trying figure out the best route to go. any recommendations appreciated

You'll need a new bolt/face if you are interested in the larger Lapua family of cases. You'll also run into people not recommending the Lapua family cases on a .700" bolt.

What weight of bullet and speed are you looking for?

looking to stay in the 250 to 300 grain area was originally looking at 338 sherman shortmag, 338 edge but didnt know if there were other calibers out there that may do better

338 edge or 338 rum would probably be the easiest conversion, I'm not sure about the stiller bolt face diameter, but it should work.

If you don't want quite so much power you could look at the 338-375ruger, some people call it the 375 campfire, brass is cheaper and readily available and it can push a 300gr pill towards 2600fps which is not to shabby.

Still waiting to for some nicer weather and some free time to get out and shoot my edge i built around Christmas.

Definitely a good deal for edge and rum.

375 Ruger still is only about $1USD, and sizing can be accomplished with a 375 ruger for the boddy and a 338rcm for the neck and shoulder bump, very similar to how some people size the EDGE. Finding the reamer can be a bit tricky but there's supposed to be a few people out there with one still.

Some day I'll build one for a LR repeater for hunting.

I've got a 338 RUM being built. I went with the RUM because, after pouring over data, It seems like it'll do pretty much what the edge will do with a shorter case and slightly less powder. I think with careful powder and bullet selection it'll match most of what the edge can do in a standard length action. The rum can be set to the same OAL but do to the shorter case the bullet will occupy less internal volume. I'm sure the EDGE will go faster, but the Rum suits my desires.
As for the brass, I have 150pcs of the ADG/ATLAS brass and it is very high quality. clean ready to load brass, centered flash holes and very consistent weight for such a large case. I think if I'm careful that 150pcs will burn out my barrel.

My edge is on a 30 inch barrel and a 20 pound rifle and I wanted to do something I could take in a tree with me so I did the RUM and I was not dissapointed

If your looking for top end performance, about the most performance you can get out of that action/bolt face combination, is a .338 edge or edge improved. You will get 2900-3000+fps with a Berger 300 depending on barrel length, powder, node, ect. So do you want the utmost performance or do you want something easier? If you want a repeater in the .338 edge then I would suggest getting a Wyatts 4" mag box and have it fitted to your action as well. Alot of people are loading these to 4" OAL or more. And especially considering the new Berger 329 that will most likely have an absurd BC, I would want a cartridge that could push the heavier bullets coming out.

Something easier and cheaper would be the 338 win mag, but personally, if I had that custom action I would go .338 Edge or possibly Edge Improved.

338 Norma seems to please everybody who shoots one. You don't need to go with a super long barrel to get good performance out of it. Also, Lapua has committed to making brass for it which I think is a big deal, as the Norma brass is quite soft.
