7mm STW Brotherhood - For those who shoot the 7mm Shooting Times Westerner

I'm in the process of joining the 7 STW brotherhood :D ! Goal is a lightweight long range capable rifle. So far I have: Lone Peaks Razor Ti long action, manners EH4 stock, good ol Timney 510, and am stashing $ for the barrel. Here's where I need your help! 26" or 28"?? I know I'm going with 1/8 twist so I can sling the really long bullets but is the additional 2" of barrel going to make enough difference FPS a designated hunting rig? Will add about 4 oz to the gun which isn't much but it adds up by the time everything is done. A few oz here and there then all the sudden it's not exactly a lightweight lol. I'd like to hit 3,000 fps with the 195 grain if I shoot them. Thanks for any advice and I have been wanting to be a part of the STW club a long time! Such a sweet cartridge!
Welcome, sounds like you have quite a plan going there.

If it were me I'd definitely go with the longer barrel, even 30" isn't out of the question. Unless you're busting really thick, heavy brush or moving through really short overhead cover I've never found barrel length to be a limiting factor in the field.

On top of the fact you can take full advantage of the slower burning powders like RL33 going with a longer barrel will allow you to set it back a time or two if you run into a problem with throat erosion; which you probably will because the STW is a blast to shoot.

There are a number of really high quality barrel manufacturers in the market today but Chris at Benchmark is who will be doing my next couple of projects. Any of the barrel manufacturers you see advertising here can do the job for you and you can have confidence in doing business with them.

My 7STW should be finished in the next few weeks. Really looking forward to getting some range time with it! In the meantime, I emailed Berger for their load data. Didn't know if Berger's load data for their 180's had been posted. Looked, but couldn't find it so here it is:

Crazy question, but I need to know :) Has anyone done any varmint loads with their STWs? Bullet Wt ?, powder? Velocity? I know its a waste of powder but I have plenty.

Jim

None here... I've always shot 160+ grain bullets in mine. I have a .25-06 AI, and had a .257 Wby before that, and several 5.56 rifles, so no real way for me to justify shooting varmints with the 7mm STW.

Agreed guys. Just wanted to see the "Pink Mist" when a bullet hits them at 3800fps or better. I guess Im just a twisted individual. But im still gonna do it. I have 16lbs of H1000 and 8lbs of RL23. I will keep you posted. I have a 223 varmint killer.

For the record Hogdens reloading site says 86gr of H1000 on pushes it at 3480fps? I shoot my 160 AB that fast. So I am sure that Hogden doesn't post any load that will be max as usual. Gonna check my hornady book when I get home.

Im going to work up a 120gr V-Max and see if it catches on fire going down range.
I've had some Amaxes just shell out going at these velocities. You'll see one puff between 50-100 and then another further out. The first is when the lead apparently melts to the point it all separates and the next when it basically explodes. The jackets just don't hold up well above 3,400fps.

What "Max" is will vary greatly depending on your chamber and how long you load the bullets. The longer you load them, closer to the lands the quicker pressure will spike so be careful.

I never lay my stw on the lands. Just for that reason. Maybe I will work up some 130gr BTHP to insure bullet integrity. I have burned up 162amax also. Because of a digital scale variance. Strictly beam scale now for that reason.

Lefty, If you get the chance try some r-26 . my stw is a 28inch kreiger 1-8.5 at 3045 3 shot
average on lab-radar. only loading 75.5 grains.
