Best Rifle Out Of The Box Part two

I received my 21 year old model 70 stainless back from the Rocky Mountain Rifle shop a couple of weeks ago. I sent it there late last fall requesting a new barrel, accurizing the action, and a timney trigger. The plain jane plastic stock was bedded when I first purchased the rifle. To the naked eye nothing special 24'' fluted #3 contour Wilson barrel. Receiver squared, threads re-cut, bolt face squared. They also drilled and retapped scope ring mounting holes to 8-40 and lapped the Talley one piece light weight rings. Played with 4 different powders and several bullets and weights and this thing shoots unreal. You could spend a lot more money and not likely going to get a rifle that shoots any better. I don't know these guys from a hole in the ground but they lived up to their reputation and then some!

That is great to hear DURAMAX!

What type of groupings and at what ranges are you getting with the new barrel?

I know they use the Wilson barrels on their RMR's. They told me that after the barrel switch they made on my Weatherby, they are getting 5" groups @ 750 yards which is outstanding! They also lapped the Talley one piece light weight rings on mine as well.

Can't wait to slam my first Elk or Moose with it!

Maybe Corlanes has gotten better. I bought a used Sendero 300 RUM that they had worked on; and the brake was so far off from being timed it wasn't funny. In their defense it did shoot incredible and served me well. My local smith I feel does better work and is super reasonable on pricing. Chambered my BRUX barrel to 300 WM threaded and installed a brake and mounted it to a BORDEN TIMBERLINE action for $350. You won't build one that shoots better than this thing.

That's awesome DURAMAX. they told me that the bullets are hitting @200 yards with mine. I am sure that mine will do that as well!:D I will be shooting Nosler Accubond ABLR's in 190 grain out of mine.

So on a scale from 1 to 10, how do your rate your new Wilson barrel?

No complaints so a 10. Cleans well and doe not require many fouling shots to get back on track. Hoping to get out to my other range this weekend to shoot some groups at 800 and validate the trajectory.

Good Luck DURAMAX! It would be great if you can report your comments here after you shoot it! Cheers

Well I got SuzieQ back today she gained a little weight and grew a little taller. She gained 12oz. and her barrel grew from 23 1/4" to 25 1/4". Can't wait to shoot her!

I will post a picture next you gents tell me what you think??? :) gun)

Looks good. Looks to be in-between a factory Accumark contour and a Rem Sendero contour. Should shoot a lot better than that pencil barrel that came on it.

No doubt MudRunner! SuzieQ now shoots 5" groups @ 800 yards. :) Before the new barrel and bedding she was a piece of chit and I would never take her hunting. Now she will be my go to hunting partner!

I will be using the factory barrel as a poker iron for my fireplace!

lol Wildrose, you are correct AS USUAL! I will have to take a better picture so you guys can see the Flutes they did to the Wilson barrel. :)

It doesn't matter. What does matter is how well it will shoot for you and knowing you it won't be many days before you find a way to get it out and see.

Be patient though and follow their break in procedures to the letter so you end up happy with it in the long run.

With all the time, money, and aggravation you've put into it already I know the temptation to just shoot, shoot, and shoot some more is probably overwhelming to day the least.

Well WildRose my new rifle will not be a range rifle and @ $5.00 a shell for the ABLR's, this rifle will be not getting shot much. I did purchase 4 boxes with the same lot number and expect that they will last me for 4 years.

My gunsmith already put 40 rounds through it, so he broke it in for me. Since a picture is worth 1000 words, this is the target @ 200 yards 1/2" group with two of the rounds touching.

I am going moose hunting in October where the GIANTS live. Hope to bag a 60" bull, that's how I will break her in.
