Coworker came to me asking for advice, mistake #1 on his part, mistake #2 was open ended budget parameters.

He was wanting something that his kids could shoot without fear of inducing recoil flinch and something inherently accurate out of the gate. His kids are 8, 11 and 13, boy sandwiched between two sisters, but all love to shoot and hunt with ARs.

My first suggestions:

#1 was to use a Manners MCS-CS 2 with a Hawkins BDL bottom metal inlet for adjustability among the kids and allow it to grow with them.

#2 was to use a Pierce Titanium action to counter some of the weight of the stock.

#3 was a Brux #2 7 twist to take advantage of the heavier bullets

#4 was Talley Lightweight mounts

That was about where we ended, then we discussed chamberings, I see no reason to go anywhere other than the 6mm Creedmoor, just the available factory options alone and it's very easy to tune and load. But I made the mistake of comparing case capacities with the 243 Winchester and 6mm GT.

He reloads for multiple calibers, but he's old school, 308, 30'06, 270 and 7mag bolt rifles, 223/5.56 and 308 ARs.

I still lean 6mm Creedmoor, but those capacities have me pondering and reloading/shooting the 100-108gr bullets, I still think his best option is the 6mm Creedmoor.

Suggestions?

That chart is neutering the 6 creed. They have the 6 gt basically the same velocity. That's really starting to lean on the 6 gt but a milder load in the creed. From a hunting standpoint I'm leaning to 243 winchester or 6mm creedmoor. I would still lean 6 creed but either would be great. One if my best friends shoots a 243, I shoot 6 creed. Both get the job done. If you're planning on running factory ammo then hands down 6 creed.

.24/6MM is one caliber I do not have at the moment. Perhaps I will explore it after my current project build is complete.

Agreed! I see more 6 CM on the shelves in my neck of the woods than the .243.

We just loaded a Browning x bolt 243 with the 70g Hammer Hunter. With Peterson brass and rl15.5 we hit 3850 fps at a full case with no signs of pressure. This light weight rifle combo was very comfortable to shoot.

I load my Ruger American 6 Creed with the 88g Hammer Hunter at a bit over 3300 fps. If I remember correctly, with h4350. Still pretty comfortable.

I would lean to the 243. Can't go wrong with either.

6 arc

Definitely won't be the ARC, been down that road and wasn't impressed.

It's going to be one of the 4 previously mentioned, I smooth forgot about the 6mm Remington.

I think, actually, I am taking the 6mm GT off the list.

Can you shoehorn a 6mm Remington into a true short action? It looks like a promising candidate.

6 Creed is the easy button. Tons of factory ammo options and great components. Think Lapua, Alpha, and Peterson brass. Although, there's great options for the GT and 243 as well.

I went a similar direction for a recent build for the kids and wife to shoot. 18" 6 Creed, Terminus Zeus on a Manners CS2.

6 creed is one you really can't go wrong with. What ever parts you wanna use to fit your budget. I bought one 2.5 years ago and it has become the go to for introducing new shooters to targets 500 and beyond. Including my father in law who had first round impacts at 618,880,1152. They are really fun. And I'm not a Creedmoor fan boy. The 6 creed flat out works. I have a load for two different bullets both with h4350.

First off, the build sheet so far is excellent! I'm looking to build an ultralight in the future and I want to use one of our Pierce Skele-Ti short actions, #2 barrel finished at 18-20", McMillan Edge, and Talley rings topped with a Trijicon Accupoint and chambered in .243 Winchester. Having said all that, I think the 6mm Creedmoor is the cartridge to go with. I love the .243 and that's what I have a lot of experience with and know. However, the Creemdoor has excellent factory ammo and is really starting to take over as one of the most prominent 6mm's on the market. I think it's here to stay and the right choice if starting from scratch.
