Hi my name is aaron and im a ... o wait wrong group 🤣
Over the last two years i have aquired several R700 actions and way too many barrels. Here my Remage barrel list.
26" 6XC 1:8 Heavy Varmint (115gr DTAC Nose ring
22" 6XC 1:75 Heavy Varmint
26" 22XC 1:8 Heavy Varmint (80gr )
27" 7mm-08 1:9 MTU (162gr)
26" 223 AI 1:8 (75gr)
16" 300 BLK 1:7
LA
28" 300 PRC (225GR ELDM)
22" 7 PRC (175gr Accubond LR)

Other 700 rifles
20" 308 (178gr Eldx)
Wifes rig
20" 6BRA (103ELDX or 105 hybrid)

Way too many options for this years deer / aoudad season. Most shots will be from stand or up too 300 yards. What would you choose ? Love hearing peoples opinions and storys. Most of my animals have been with my 20" 308 over the last three years. And have taken several others with a 22-250 or 270.

I think of more as a problem than showing off. Just ask the wife.

Thoughts on hammers? I havent used them before.
Well, this is one way to be a "show off"!

I'd say everything except the 223AI and 300Blk.

708 and 308 get my sentimental value vote. I'd be shooting Hammers though.

I swear I don't know how many times I've set up "another rig" only to remind myself the crap I own, ends up owning me! I inherit all their nuances! LOL

So, real easy with the Hammers. You will be golden DRT kills to 300yds no worries:
Cruise them both to around 3000-3100fps. (I always think hogs, but in your case with deer, even better)

120 or 130gr Hammer Hunter 708 WIN 27" barrel 3200-3300fps (I think easily obtainable)
137gr hammer hunter 308 WIN 20" barrel @3000fps (Obtain conservatively too)

If you haven't taken anything with the 7PRC I'd use that. I just built one on a Tikka action and plan to use it this year on the deer hunt.
I've had outstanding success with the 165g SST in the 308 and usually always go to that when stand hunting where shots are no longer than 250-300 yards on animals similar in size to what you're hunting.
Never used hammers, but I'm a heavy for caliber kind of guy.
Nothing wrong with light and fast, especially for the distance you're looking at.

You folks make it soooo difficult and complicate your lives more than I could deal with! 🤔 😜😂🤣

Except for varmint "shooting" or shooting hundreds of rounds at paper or steel……simplify your life! Go with one rifle/cartridge/bullet for all of your hunting needs! 🙀

I know that I'll be "excommunicated" for that comment! 😁 memtb

I have really been surprised with my 22" 7mm Prc. The recoil isnt as bad as i was expecting.

Some 23 years ago a snarky relative demanded to know - "how many guns do you have?" This made me think of what I actually needed to accomplish my shooting goals. I quit shooting deers many years ago. The thought of gutting a big beast & transporting the remains out of the forest or field makes me unhappy - been there & done that. This guy was a real jerk elitist, but his query made me think of what I needed to accomplish my modest shooting goals.

Another relative, an accomplished, highly rated, successful tech manager thought I had an excessive number of scope sights as I only could shoot one gun at a time & scopes could be moved from gun to gun. He quickly did a cost analysis and determined I could acquire superior optics than the present and increase my shooting capabilities. This guy is a super success in everything & a quick learner.

I have a modest shooting background, I got as far as NRA Hi Power, National Match, expert with real good 200 & 300 rapid fire, & 600-yard slow fire. My poor 200-yard standing score prevented me from getting a master classification.

My thoughts are:

If lots of cheap components are not available, shooting is limited. This got me into: .20P, .223., 6.5-06 and now the Creedmoor family, 6mm & 6.5.

The old .308 or 7.62X52 & .223 or 5.56X45 would accomplish many things but having to crank on some 18 MOA elevation to hit at 600 with a .308 and marginal performance at ranges over 300 with the .223 got me into the 6.5-06 & .22-.250. Many hits on rock chucks & other rodents at ranges over 600 with the 6.5-06 & over 350 with the .22-.250.

I am confident that I could do everything I want, including cheap, easy buy components with:

.20P (.20-.223), 40 VMax - .22-.250, 75 H ELDM - 6mm Creedmoor, 87 Vmax & 105 H hpbt - 6.5 Creedmoor, 120 HELDM, 140 HELDM - 6.5 -06, 120 HELDM, 140 HELDM.

The Creedmoor rifles can use easily available small rifle primers. Cheap .223 brass & small powder charges make the .20P useful. Cheap .30-06 brass & long pointy bullets make the 6.5-06 a go to for up to 1,000. Volume rodent shooting with the .20P is a good choice, like pack up to six hundred rounds for an extended 4–5-day shoot.

Exceptions are the .22LR & 6mm Akley. The first time took the Ackley out I blew a real big rock chuck off a mound of dirt just short of 600
yards. I really like that round & will always have one. 87 Vmax just short of 3,400 fps, 10 twist. COW fireforming with large rifle pistol primers & pricy 7X57 Norma brass needing lots of work. 50.5 grains of VN165.

Everybody needs a .22LR. I have a Ruger 22/45 MKIV, & Ruger 22/77. I keep more than 1000 CCI .22LR Blazers available.

Gunz, Gunz, Guns, - how many gunz do you have??? Learn to live with irritations.

Aoudad, 300 PRC IMO.

Why not give yourself the best edge in the wind? That's the real issue in West Texas. Pretty much any bullet you can get there will do the job, but getting it through the breeze is paramount, there's nothing like a light 20+mph switching cross wind to make the day exciting. Normally I'm calm about ballistics inside 500 yards but we're talking a foot plus of difference based on where the wind is coming from at any given minute.

My rifle for West Texas this year is a 30-338 Lapua Improved 😂 230 Berger currently unless I find something better really fast.

You arent joking about the wind at all. 30-338. That will definitely get the job done. Part of me wishes i had the barrel cut to 24" instead of 28" to hunt with. But the 7mm prc aint no joke. Maybe kill one with the 300 around 500 plus should be my next goal.

The year of the 7mm
7mm SAW 24" 1:8 twist Preffered Barrel Remage Prefit.
Shooting 162gr eldm with 42gr Sw Precision around 2800 fps. Picture of my first five shots.
7mm SAW vs 7mm Prc.
Going on a Aoudad hunt this weekend.
