Hello Hunters

I'm retiring and would like to get into long range shooting, 1000 yds at most. I load ammo and hunt but have never shot long distance. I have no clue as what scope to get. There are so many options and just as many preferences. I'm not wealthy, however I do believe in getting something good. Buy once cry once makes sense.

Please tell me what has worked for you and what you suggest.

Thanks again

John

Congrats on retirement. There are so many options and opinions on this subject. If you don't mind shelling out a couple of grand, the options will really get overwhelming. If it is primarily for target shooting way out there, weight won't be a big concern. However, it is tough to narrow down options unless you narrow down your purposes and budget.

Nightforce is a good place to start looking, I am a big fan of the 5.5 x 22 x 56mm with TMOAR reticle. I have shot out to 850 yards. Repeatable dialing and the reticle isn't overwhelming. They usually run around $1800.00, but can be had for less when buying used, which I would not shy away from. Heavy glass though, if that matters.

I have a $3000 budget and would shoot long range and hunt. My thoughts are that if I can hit at 1000 yds, I can hit at 350 - 400 yds. I won't shoot game further than 400 yds.

Thank you. I'll look into it

This is a great budget for finding a scope that will not disappoint. Nightforce, March, S&B, and Kahles come to mind. It is all about personal preference when it comes to reticles, weight, and magnification range IMO. I prefer a wide field of view on bottom end when hunting as well as reasonable weight (under 30 ozs).
Good luck with search.

When I open a thread like this and they don't give a budget...

But I did see further down "$3000".

Prepare to be amazed at what $3k will buy you.

I would suggest a used top tier scope.

Give me a few, and I will make some suggestions...

One of these might be a touch over your budget, but worth every penny.

Thank you.

I would recommend a used Nightforce ATACR 5-25x56. Moa or Mil reticle. I also like the gen 3 Vortex Razor in 6-36x56.
