rifle build help

Hello im new to the forum and looking for help building a long range rig. I have narrowed my caliber choices to a 7mm rem mag or a 300 win mag. This rifle will be for hunting and target, hopeing to work my way out to at least 1000 yards. Ive shot both calibers and like them both.

The game i will be hunting will be deer bear and elk. Hoping to go out of state soon for elk and i dont want to see a nice bull walk away because i cant make the shot. I bow hunt elk in my home state of oregon. Looking to go to idaho and Wyoming in the next year or so.

So i dont know if i should go semi-custom or all out custom. It would really help me if you guys could post some of your builds and specs parts loads. Just trying to gain some knowledge on which direction i should go. Rifles i've look at are remington sendero for a factory build up and for a custom i was thinking rem 700 action. Then sending it to pac-nor for barrel and action job. Any help would be awesome.

I am definately no expert, but I recently was in your position about 2 years ago. I had a M700 7mag. I now have a custom M700 with a Krieger barrel hunting rifle in 7 mag.

1) You need to know how much you are willing to spend and how much your
project will cost. Tons of research and phone calls.

2) What gunsmith to use (Krieger did my action / bolt face work and installed
the barrel)

3) How much time do you have to wait. This can be a time consuming project.

4) You need to know what your expectations of the rifle are going to be: this
will impact cost

5) If you go custom, you will by defalt become a handloader, so there goes
more $$ and research.

6) Make sure you do your research on barrel break in and how to maintain a
custom barrel. There are a lot of opinions out there. Some are very
valuable and some not so much. Remember to consider the source.


I could not be happier with my rig. It shoots extremely accurate and it is set up exactly the way that I want.

These are just some suggestions to think about.

I do reload so no issue there. I have a gunsmith that my family has used for years. Dave at lock stock and barrels. He has rebarreled 3 rifles for us and all 3 barrels came from pac-nor. They all shot close to 1/2 inch at 100 yards.

I want this rifle to shoot 1/2 at least. Ive done a lot of research over this last year. Basicly im looking for feed back on manufacturers and products. This reason im really looking for that is because i dont want to dump my money down the wrong drain.

I have a good budget for the rifle build itself. Still working on the scope budget. Time is good cause im a commercial fishermen so im gone quite a bit so you learn to have patience lol. Would love to get a look at your rifle if you could post it up.

First off welcome to LRH, Since you are thinking about a sendero I will make this suggestion, choose the caliber you are most comfortable with, most are of the opinion the 300 is the best choice. I will not argue that point since I have both, I had a 7mm RM built and it shoots lights out, I then decided I wanted a 300 and was going to have one built until I had a chance to buy a new 5r 300wm. The RM has a 26" krieger barrel, jewel trigger set at 1.25lbs 700 action completely trued, HS precision stock, vias brake, and I just had the bolt fluted, skelatonized, and a new knob on handle work done by Kampfeld customs, Karl does an awesome job. The 5r I have just started to do some work on it, muzzle brake, jewel trigger, and a sako extracter, and Karl will do the bolt on this as well, that is about all it needs can't tell you how it shoots haven't shot it yet, but from what I have heard they are supposed to be shooters. The sendero's are pretty darn accurate right out of the box the only thing you may want to do is put a better trigger on it,

if that is the way you go. All that being said the custom is my favorite rifle, because I designed it to my taste, and not anyone else's

Rick that rifle looks like a gem. Very nicely done. I really dont know for sure if i want a sendero that was kind if the back up plan if i couldnt afford a custom build. But i was browsing through the net just a lil bit ago looking at barrels,parts and what not. From what i look at i came up with action and build i think i could get a pretty nice rifle only for around 2500. Let me know if im in the ball park or not.

I would say yes, I have $2200. in the rifle only that includes the purchase of a new 700 action, and all of the smiths charges. I'm lucky the smith that built my rifle only lives 16 mi. from me so I was pretty much involved in the build from the get go, this rifle shoots pretty much one hole groups at 200 yds if I don't screw up he builds bench rest guns for the most part so he is really anal about accuracy, and making sure every aspect was done right. I personally don't think any well known and respected smith could have built a better shooting rifle,JMO The rifle weighs 12.5 lbs with scope jfyi. Good luck and keep us updated on the route you go and of course we will want pics.

I think you can expect sub .5 MOA groups at 100 yards for $2200 (not including scope) for sure. I have been able to shoot 2.5" groups at 600 yards with my rifle from sand bags. It will shoot .75 MOA groups at 300 yards with factory ammo consistently from sand bags.

I decided to go with Krieger because based on my research, it seems that most people put them in top 3 barrel makers in U.S. (or the world I guess). Many consider them to be the best. My barrel contour is a #6, based on Krieger description and is 26" long.

My rifle is in an H.S. precision stock. Maybe not considered absolute best for ultimate accuracy, but H.S. Precision stocks are rock solid and many tack drivers sit in H.S. Precision stocks. I think they are very good for a hunting rifle. The recoil lug and front of the action are bedded in Devcon.

I have Leupy Mk IV Long Range base and Mk IV rings (medium hieght). Maybe a bit on the heavy side, but rock solid. A Leupy VX 3 4.5-14 X 50 mm Long Range is on top. I had the custom shop install an M1 dial on top for elevation.

Also I had Red Creek Tactical apply Cerakote to the barreled action.

Total weight of my rig is about 12.5#.

K thats good to know im in the ball park. Thats pretty cool that u lived so close to the smith. Be completely involved in the build would be awesome to further your knowledge from a pro like that. What contour of barrel did you choose and how deep are the flutes? I wanna be some where around 9 to 10lbs rifle only.
