We have a stainless Remington action that was originally a 300rum. Looking at using it for a build for a 280 Ackley. Will need a new bolt for the smaller cartridge.

What are the thoughts on using a chromolly bolt in the stainless action?

Steve

I've done it plenty.

Lube you bolt. Lug to action mating surfaces. Portions that slid on the action.

A little goes a long way. It's really to stop wear and galling.

Have you stopped to consider that the feed rails and feed ramp have been machined to accommodate the much larger diameter cartridge? Yes, a new bolt with a smaller bolt face will solve one problem but it certainly doesn't solve the feeding problem.

Besides ordering a new bolt, the way to avoid feeding issues is to use a DBM designed for the '06 cartridges and adjusted to feed the Ackley shoulder.

Regards.

We decided to order a new action for the build and save this one for something else.

It needs to be an XX-Nosler.
