I was wondering if anyone out there has shot their 165 grain vld in a 1:10 barrel and had luck or if it is just to slow. I see their website recommends a 1:9 so I'm just seeing if anyone has some real world experience and had success with the 1:10.

Bigngreen has had good success with the 165's on elk but not sure what twist he has? I would guess it is a 10 though......Rich

I've shot thousands of the 165's through a 1-10 twist barrel, quite a few 175's as well. My elevation 5600+ which gives me more stability. Even our 270 Wins will run them fine.

bigngreen that is great to hear. I guess i will have to give them a try if i can get my hands on some extra cash. I am only sitting about 3000 feet elevation but i guess thats better than sea level.

Is there any chance someone could post some loads to start at or pm them to me?

thanks for the input

I have experience with 165s but mine is off .270 AI, 1:8, and 30". Anyways, check this >>> http://www.longrangehunting.com/forums/f17/165-gr-vld-270-winchester-73897/; there's some load recipe that you can start with.

I vaguely remember that there's a LRH member having good success with 1:10 at sea level but cannot remember which thread ... perhaps Rhian does.

Good luck!

Ed

ADDED: Found it, see #27 of >>> http://www.longrangehunting.com/forums/f17/load-work-ruger-270-win-elk-92326/index4.html

I tried the 165's in a Sendero w/ a 26 inch barrel and one day they would shoot extremely well- Cold/rainy/sea level in Ca. The next day I went out it was warmer/sunny shot barely worth reloading.

175's would not group at all. They wouldn't stabilize.

I got so frustrated I sent the rest of them to Rhian as he was having success with them.

I am in the mood to buy a new rifle (300 WM), but I also have thoughts of a new barrel with a 9 twist to continue my love affair with the 270. They are so nice to shoot and I am not a fan of the brake-these pills give you the extra umph needed...

Hi Shane.......a .270 Sherman should get you 3000'. .........Rich

does anybody know if there is anywhere to order matrix bullets other than direct through the company. I dont want to get alot if they may not shoot and it gets kinda expensive for a box or two once shipping is added for this broke recent college grad

Idaho,
Call and ask them. When I ordered the 165s they sent me (25) of the 175's to see if I could get them to shoot.
It's worth a shot...

For those shooting the 1:9 twist, where did you get your barrels? I have enquired and only Hart (3) month wait and Krieger (6) month wait will do them.

Hey BignGreen, You have probably gotten too many questions on these, but hey you're knowledgeable. Anyway, I have a Vanguard series 2 in 270wsm and have been using the Berger 140's and am interested in moving up to the matrix 165's. The twist in this factory rig is 1-10 @ 24" and no muzzle brake. I can shoot 1/2moa with the 140 bergers, and I see you shoot the 165's in a similar twist rate and they stabilize fine. Can you share your load data? I have RL 17 & 22, H1000 and IMR4831. I use Norma cases and either Fed M215 or CCI250. You can PM me if you would prefer. Thanks again. Chris
