We have not bad the best year when it comes to buck quality. Not sure why but it seems when we have a wet summer, our buck quality goes south. Does not make sense but that had held true around our parts for the last 35 years i have been chasing whitetails. We have a load of bucks, more then ever, just no high quality bucks. So this year we decided we needed to do some management type hunting and try to take some mature 4x4 or lesser bucks.

my daughter Kenzie had picked out a buck we had seen in late august and september. He was a nice wide, 4 year old 4x4. That was the one she wanted and when opening day came, she watched and passed on a dozen deer. I would see her buck from time to time on our property or the neighbors but always when she was at school and he would be gone by the time she got home. Would always send her pics which i am sure she enjoyed!! 😳

last week, he showed up, middle of the day and i got some good pics of him, again, she is at school.

just a nice solid mature deer.
this past weekend it really warmed up and the deer activity pretty much stopped. However, sunday evening, we had a good group of does come through to feed and a very respectable younger 6x5 and nice 4 year old 4x4 come through as well. Still she passed on them saying she wanted her buck.

told her this was the time of year if you pass on a buck, it could be the last one you see. Still she passed. Then with about 10 minutes of legal shooting time left, we caught movement of a few deer running out into our pasture. A couple does and what appeared to be her buck following closely behind. Was trying to make sure it was him and while he looked good i was not positive. Told her i was 75% sure that was her buck. She lined up her 243 and at just shy of 300 yards made an absolutely perfect heart shot. He ran 70 yards and piled up!!

now i was nervous hoping i had told her right!! When we got up to the buck, i was relieved to see that it was in fact him. Very proud of her patients and ability to pass lesser deer. Even though we had a poor quality year, she passed on a dozen GOOD bucks to hold out for the one she wanted. Very proud of my hunting buddy and her very beautiful Montana whitetail. Her little K-rifle strikes again!!
