Need .264 Win Mag Help

Running a factory Model 70 1-9" 26" with the 142 LRAB at 3225 with RL33. I've played with it down to 28 and up to 105. The 105 load tops out at 3260 the 28 degree day was just under 3200. Not the best but the groups held up for me.

Is this the m70 extreme weather rifle by chance? Car to share you load data?

Chad, it's a featherweight. I don't have the exact load. Co. truck burned most of the garage and my loading book and some of the ammo went up with it back in '18.
As I recall, the load was around 75 gr. Win cases, Rem 9 1/2 primer. In my rifle I hit pressure signs around 77-78.

I've got a 264 win mag that I brought to be a "new custom". It has a 28" brux 8 twist with a brake on it. I've tried 127 Barnes , 130 accubonds, & 140 bergers. I've worked the bergers up as well as bought 20 from Copper Creek.I've yet to find anything this gun will shoot to the standards I think it should. I talked to the guy that built the gun to see if he had any recommendations. That's when I found out that barrel had previously been on someone else gun & after 25 shots they decided to go another route. I just bought some 147 elds for it & I'm considering getting some 156 bergers. If I can't find a load I like soon I'll be trashing the brux. The gunsmith that built it also built my 7 mm mag with a 26" Bartlein 9 twist. I have a 264 win mag model 70 from 1979 that I don't bother loading for because it shoots factory nosler 130 accubonds in the 0.6-0.7 range @ 200 yards.

Mtank, mine shoots the 156s over N570 into a dime at 200 yds.. Try it. Awesome set up with that 28" barrel for N570.

Have been loading, shooting & hunting with the 264 since 1964. Have taken tons of game with it From antelope to deer & elk. With the heavier bullets VV24N41 which is a tick slower than N570 Available from Powder Valley for $209 , 8 lbs only. High velocity & small groups. 3225 fps with 140 class bullets & 26" Bbl. Next 3455 FPS with Rel 33 & Barnes 120gr TSX or Hammer 121gr also 26" bbl. These mono's have proven to be top notch elk bullets. As to the 143 ELDX I had it blow to pieces on a deer I shot this past season with my 6.5x06. Under 100yds. Lost a lot of meat. Hit a rib going in & created havoc. Remember the ELDX is only a C&C bullet, not magic . Not even bonded with a long unsupported explosive thin nose My experience is that you will get far more shots under 200yd than over. As to the 28" Bbl , my opinion not needed & overly cumbersome if you are actually going into the field hunting. Looks good on

paper, unhandy in in the field. Find my self using my 24" 264's far more than the 26"

versions. Have had 28" models, but no more. Based on years of experience.. Just a note Rel 33 drives the Hammer 121 gr to 3419 out of my 24" 264. Easy , not the slightest sign of pressure. Beats Rel 26 considerably.

it's worth.

OK.. Started with 69 grs of Rel 33. 24" Bbl 1/8 twist Very mild... Worked up to 75 grs which produced 3455 fps with the 121gr Hammer . Easy extraction without the slightest sign of pressure. 74grs showed 3419 fps. Decided to stay with the 74 gr load. Started with two new cases. Fired a total of 14 rounds ( 7 times each case ) working up the load & shooting targets. Primer pockets stayed snug/tight. Target, 4 shots at 108 yds. At 235 yds on my range . shot almost as tight. To much snow to slog threw for me to use my 522 td range. My test tell me Rel 33 is a fantastic powder with the 264 mag. Retumbo , I have found to be be the fastest acceptable. H-1000 to fast with any bullet heavier than 100 gr in the 264. Rel 26 although a good powder is to fast for this size of case

Hespco how do you like the hammers? I've looked at there stuff & was thinking of trying something in their 130s. If I was building a 264 win I would've done it a little different but this gun was available when I picked up my 7mm rem mag so I got both lol. The 127 long range Barnes is what I had in mind for this gun but so far I've not found a winning combo. I recently got a can of h1000 for my 7 mm & was thinking of trying it on a 264 load until I saw your comment. I was telling a buddy about my 264 issues & he recommended the 130 Sierra tip game king. Anyone tried these?

With an 8 twist, I'd sure give the 124 Hammer Hunters a try! Both my 264s are 1:9.....that's why I'm shooting 121 Hammers.

I don't know if you read my post from last Sunday where I shot a large cow Sat morning. I used my 264 with the 121 gr Hammer. Shot was about 80 yds. Bullet passed completely thru both front shoulders. Cow went no where. Blood shot meat was minimal. I used the Hammer bullet in this rifle because it would not shoot the Barnes ( my preference ) accurately. It shot the Hammer's perfectly. Other 264's I have shot the Barnes into tiny little groups. Rifles can be different. 1/8 or 1/9 twist with the 121 Hammer works great. I have found H-1000 to be to fast a burning powder in the 264 except for the 100gr bullets. Rel 33, Retumbo much better. Considerably higher velocity than with h-1000.

I've wanted to for awhile so I'm going to order some hammers. Thinking I might do the sample pack of the 121 heavy hammers & the 124 hammer hunters

Just another thought. I weighted 10 of the 121 gr Hammers. All 10 weighted almost exactly 122.8grs each. Strange I thought, but they shot fine in both 1/8 & 1/9 twist 264's.

Thanks for the info. Maybe I'll just buy some 121s. I'm assuming my old model 70 264 is a 9 twist.
