I want to put a break on my 338 edge, but there is only 1" from where the flutes stop and the end of the barrel. Is that enough space?

Yes it is, your thread tennon will be around .600 long for most brakes.

As coyboy stated you'll have enough room. A Vais brake uses a .400" thread tenon length while the Muscle Brakes use around a .625" thread tenon length.
