Does anyone have any history with cutting edge bullets? I can't find any recent reviews on them. I've got a LA 300 wsm(20in 1:8 twist barrel) that I'm going to be doing load development on and have been looking at their 180gr single feed lazers. The other bullet I'll be trying is the Barnes 212 lrx bore rider but velocity's will be low though hopefully not too low so I'm looking at other options if it doesn't perform well. This rifle will be used for the larger elk/moose maybe even brown bear type critters. On paper the cutting edge bullets seem like a solid option.

Are you familiar with Mcguire ballistics? They have good bc's and mushroom not blow apart.

I've looked into them, couldn't find much information on their bullet design on their website. I don't think I could get enough velocity out of those 195s to reach any extended ranges unless they are a bore rider design allowing me to seat the bullet a little further out. This rifle isn't throated…..yet… The cutting edge bullets have an impressive min velocity if actually true and I don't think I mind that it sheds its pedals but retains its base through. It's obviously a different outcome than what is expected from the Barnes but still sounds good on paper. And their single feeds are a bore rider design.

I've killed brown bear and moose with Cutting Edge Lazers. 275gr 338 cal Lazers.
I found others reporting good terminal performance on game on various Forums before I began hunting with them.
They'll kill if you keep your impact velocity high enough.
I'm skeptical how lethal they'd be impacting at 1,400fps. I'd suggest limiting shot range to maintain a minimum 1,800fps impact velocity.

I've used their raptor's to great success on a handful of animals in 350 legend. They basically work like a hammer bullet. Shed's large petals and the core penetrates really deep with a nice big meplat. No personal experience with the lazers but from what I've seen they function very similarly and well. Someone on here took a pretty big bear with a lazer at a pretty decent range, hopefully they pop in here and post pics of that. Don't remember who posted it. But cutting edge has great service and their bulllets are probably the most consistent I've used. With the 350 extended range raptors it was like seating depth didn't even matter. No matter where they sat they grouped really well

Last hunting season I loaded the 200gr Lazer in my 300PRC. My final load generated 2,875fps at the muzzle using H1000. I seat the Seal-Tite-Band just outside the the cartridge mouth, CEB's recommended seating depth. This seating puts me at 3.74 OAL and about 20 thou off the lands. This just fits into my magazine. Last year I killed a Caribou, Grizzly and bull Elk with this load. Terminal performance was impressive. However no long shots were required. The longest being 209 on the grizzly.

the hardest part to put in some context is the level of killing ability that the individual expects & needs for their situation ahead

We are all different & some will go that is good others go that's crap

A few things added to that as it depends on shot placement , impact velocity & the resistance that's encountered on those & how much leeway ea style has or bases they'll cover & the consistency they will do it at ( eg does the pill do the same thing on multiple shots/critters or perfect then delayed opening or open to fast )

So broadly speaking on a general killing basis you are better served with the laser hitting @ plus 2000 & even better @ plus 2400
Now this goes with the vast majority of pills regardless of brand or style

The better pills will give the ability to anchor the critter quicker on a more consistent basis & other brands or styles within ceb lines have shown a more consistent basis to get it done in a quicker manner

Personally better pills on the market than the laser for the application that I am confronted with sometimes & yet maybe perfectly adequate for another so I use others for which cover more bases & laser doesn't fit with those

a bit more of your personal application & wants/needs would be the ones I'd explain to people a touch more & then a more tailored approach could be given

The key is the range you'll take the critter too & angle of it that you'll take & if you'll take smaller critters after this is one that would need some thoughts on also if that is a possibility

Cheers

CEB's are a softer copper alloy like Hammer uses and function very similar, losing the nose creating shrapnel while the shank passes thru usually creating two holes to lose blood. The softer alloy creates less engraving pressure than Barnes but CEB has a smooth bearing surface with no relief cuts/driving bands like Hammer and Barnes so the velocities run very similar. I like how the CEB and Hammer bullets function compared to the Barnes ~100% retention type of hard alloy. I have had great performance from the MTH and Lazer line with all of the bullets shank passing thru while the tip comes apart and shreds the internals. Last year I took a cow at 1,060 yards with a 275 grain Lazer that punched a hole thru both shoulders and the shrapnel hit the heart and lungs dropping her instantly. In some of the recent King of 2 Mile competitions most of the top 10 were shooting Lazers, not sure why, maybe they are sponsored but they must shoot pretty well either way

Wedgy,
What twist rate is your barrel, and approx impact velocity at 1060yds?
Thanks

I run an 8 twist in the .338, 7 twist in the .30 cal, and 6.5 twist in the 6.5mm hunting guns and have yet to blow up a mono, not sure if it is possible I'm in a non lead state so I shoot mostly copper even though I hunt out of state a lot.
My app say impact was about 1,970 fps, starting at 3,018 fps

I will start with a disclaimer.
I have not pulled the trigger on game with them to date, but have about 6 years experience using them primarily for ELR 1 mile and 2000metre comp shooting.
I use them in 30, 33 & 37-416 Rigby Improved cartridges at impressive speeds. They are fantastic long range bullets that I cannot fault, but will say that I HBN coat them, as well as all other bullets I use in these cartridges.
I have only used the Lazer single feed heavy projectiles, but there are plenty of lighter options in all calibres.
I will be trying the 264 Lazer in my custom 264WM and 6.5-300Bee this summer.

Cheers.

Thanks! That's what I expected ...

You're spinning them the proper way, IMO, in order to maximize the odds for good terminal performance on game animals.

Because of the seal tite band patent that they have, and the fact that many 375 Not-A-CheyTac reamers are set up to run them specifically. For all the anit-copper hate on the hunting side of things (admittedly from being forced to use them with weak reasoning), monos are very consistent which is key for ELR. So much so that Berger got on the mono bandwagon for Litz's EnABLer.

They fantastic IMO, I use them the same as Hammers. Nothing long-range kill wise with them, but short range they act exactly as advertised. They run more of a normal weight for caliber vs Hammer tends to offer very-light for caliber.

Texas DGAF about copper vs lead, and I choose mono copper because Hammer, CE, and Makers have done so well for me. I don't recover bullets, but I recover dead animals easily... because they don't tend to run very far when they get smacked
