It doesn't beat a fast twist 22-250 or a creed. The br variants are just insanely simple, insanely accurate, and the easiest cartridges to load for. Make for a great experience

i think most missed what you said in your post, short barrel with a can. that said 22-250, 220 swift and the other large capacity rounds will just waste powder. on the other hand you want long range, not sure the 2 are compatible. had an are-15 in 6x45 (6mm-223) in 18" barrel. it was built using a benchrest barrel that had gone from the .1 to .2's and was no longer competitive, so it was retired. in my ar it would shoot in the .4-.5 consistently. great for short and long shots on called coyotes.
in a 17 with a short barrel go with the 17 fireball, doesn't give up much to a 17 remington. get the right gwist and shoot 25 gr vmax or 30 gr bullets.
then again that's just me.

my 22-250AI is crazy accurate and has LONG legs for box stands, but I do most of my field coyote hunting with my .223 bolt or AR, and for tight my combo in .222/12 gauge.

short barrel, the 17 fireball will burn most of the powder in a 16-18" barrel whereas the 17 Remington won't. it's a matter of efficiency and economics, less powder, less barrel erosion.
How are you liking your 22GT? I'd like to build a 16-18" barreled, lighter-weight, low (no) recoiling, dedicated coyote rifle…always suppressed….thermal in the not-too-distant future…as flat shooting as possible to 300 yds (would really just like to be able to hold hair)…not worried about fur, just fun shooting and predator reduction…would the 22's really have much recoil reduction as compared to shooting lightweight bullets in a 6 of some flavor…I'll be reloading…was thinking thinking 22GT, but really wide open, and would appreciate your thoughts-thanks

Love it. Mine is a 22" suppressed.
The 77TMKs @ 3200fps have put 16 coyotes down since August (just targets of opportunity, not actually calling).
Recoil is minimal at most.
I would say with a 200 yard zero, you would be about 1.1" high at 100, and 5" low @ 300 depending on conditions. You could probably do a 250 zero and be good to 300 easily.
What powder should I be looking for in a 16-18" barrel with 55-77 gr bullets? 8208? 4895? 1:7 appropriate? Thanks. I just really like your taste in guns and cartridges, and I'm convinced of your competency shooting and reloading…

Mine is a 1:7", but I knew I wanted to run 77s and heavier. I also run the 90SMK.
If 77s are the heaviest you will run, a 1:8" will do nicely. The 69TMK/SMK only require a 1:10". Anything lighter like a 55-62 would still be fine in a 1:10". But 1:8" probably won't be TOO fast.
My favorite coyote set ups are a 16" 243win tikka 10 twist. It wears a Steiner S35 thermal most of the time.

69gr absolute hammers at 3450fps
87gr V Max at 3050fps
The other is an 18" 22creedmoor tikka 8 twist.
69gr TMKs at 3350fps
62gr Eld VT at 3625fps.
80gr Eld M at 3050fps (mild)
And before I cut the barrel down on my 25sst, at 26" it was pushing
67gr shock hammers at 4200fps
75gr hammer hunters at 3930fps
90gr absolute hammers at 3750fps
All wear the same TB Ultra 5 and the creed weighs 8.2 lbs all up with the can and March 3-24x52mm

I'm a big fan of the 204 Ruger on coyotes here in Texas. Built on a AR platform you get immediate follow up with the near zero recoil of the 204. It's flat and fast to 400 yards for the longer open field shots, and with a thermal it's difficult to judge distance perfectly so the flatness matters.

I shoot 600 yard groups. I also have three .224 Valkyrie AR groups under an inch at 500 meters (see attached photo)
. 6 GT because you can get highest quality cases from Alpha with small rifle primers. With 105-108 gr bullets, it is truely a thousand yard cartridge. The 6mm bullets create enough splash to correct for follow up shots, but not enough recoil to loose sight of the critter. The problem with the .22-250 and Ackley (I have two of each that just sit in the safe) is that they have large rifle primers and barrel life in hundreds not thousands of rounds. I shoot only coated bullets in nitrocarburized barrels to combat throat erosion. The 22 Creedmore would be a better choice in .224 Bullets because of brass quality, with .22-250 Ackley or Swift performance and barrel life. I shoot 80 gr bullets in the .22 BR at 500 meters but these bullets often give inadequate splash to correct shots. The same is true of my 7 twist custom Bartlein .20 BR set up for 55 gr Bergers which I love dearly. At 300 yards the .17 Remington and .204 Ruger are great. The .22 PPC or .22 BR are the most accurate out to 500 yards with 7.5 or 7 twist barrels.
Please correct me if you have a successful rifle, but I have not seen the .224 85.5 Berger 90 Berger, 88 ELDM or 90 Sierra, 95 Sierra group under two inches at our club 500 meter range. I can tell you that 7 twist is not the answer.
