Comparing the Berger 210 VLD to the 215 Hybrid

Broz,

Thanks for the info.

Would the hybrid theoretically work better in a 300 Wby with the longer freebore? I had thought you had implied that once before, but just confirming. I'll be working up 300 Wby loads very soon.
I'd say no. VLDs are more sensitive to seating depth so having extra free bore is likely better for them. That's Y the hybrid (Tangent Ogive) is such a popular projectile; less fuss with similar results of a properly seated VLDs.

The VLD has a longer bearing surface (shorter nose) so requires more FB to properly position the bullet in the case neck also.

New to the forum but have been following this thread for a long time. Seems that most have custom rifles and 26" plus barrels. Alot are pushing 76 plus grains H1000 with extended COAL that will not feed from a factory magazine. So how does this work in a factory rifle, I wanted to find out.
First off, I bought a Rem 700 5R Tactical Gen 2 in 300 win mag. I wanted it due to the 24" barrel and longer magazine. 26" barrels are like carrying a flag pole in the mesquite thickets.
I tried many loads following this forum hoping for a magical .750 MOA out of a factory rifle. It didn't happen.
76.5 was max of H1000, Node was more in the 74.5 to 75.0. I was able to get two inside each other with one 3/4" outside several times. I tried several seating depths that would feed from my magazine. Usually 40 to 60 jump.
I tried Lapua, Fed and Rem cases. Fed 215 Match, WLRM, Fed 215, CCI 250 primers. All with them same results.
My factory Rem 700 (Timney trigger, bedded recoil lug) just would not digest it. I'm thinking that the short 24" barrel may have had trouble burning all the H1000.
So I went back to the old RL22 with 210 Bergers. Not a great temp sensitive powder but it will work.
First two holes on the right were the first two fired. The second two on the left were 3 minutes apart. Could be the hold on the rifle from an old fart but good enough to hunt these little coues.
Personal advise to those looking to get the Berger 215, H1000, Fed215 combo to work in a factory rifle, you may want to stick to a 26" tube.
Broz did an incredible job on this write up. A thesis that will be revisited for decades. I wish I could have gotten it to work for me.

Your barrel length isn't your problem. You tried 4 different primers and 3 different types of brass, yet only a narrow window of seating depth. Try going shorter.

VLDs are not more sensitive to seating depth. That used to be a common train of thought but its just not true. The 210 VLD is the most common bullet used in 1000yd BR for the 30 cals. Some guys have the 215 going well, but most are on the 210. The 210 vld and the 230 hybrid are my favorites for accuracy.

Almost a year since this thread was last commented on but I'll add mine. Got this bull at 1176 yards using the 215 hybrid. 300 WSM 2817 FPS muzzle velocity. Bull was quartering away so put the bullet behind the ribs. Bullet went length wise through him under the spine cutting a trough across the top of one lung then came up through a rib and lodged in the front of a back strap. Bull ran 50 yards and piled up. At this range and impact velocity the tip of the bullet was gone and the remainder was not mushroomed. Either need to keep the range a bit closer or go to a bigger case… but it did kill quickly.
