As you all know I am a huge fan of the 210 Berger VLD, and have been for years. The amount of elk and other game we have taken with this bullet is stunning, and have never tracked an animal. Last season my son "Young-Gun" wanted to test the 230 Hybrid OTM in his 300 win and we did. We really like them and they dropped plenty of game DRT for us. But then comes along the 215 Berger Hybrid. So I decided to give them a whirl in my 300 win. My rifle is sending the 210 from a 28" Broughton 1 in 10 to a MV of 2995 average with h-1000 in Lapua brass. The question is, can I get these 215's close to that speed? If so they definatly have some things to offer.

I just got 3 boxes of the 215's today and will soon begin testing. Right now I sit here with calipars and comparator in hand sizing the two up. I was pretty shocked at the difference in length right off the bat. The 215 sure is a racey looking bullet.

Here are a few numbers:................ 210............................. 215

OAL= ---------------------------- 1.490" -------------------- 1.620"

Base to O-give-------------------- .794" -------------------- .844"

Length of boat tail----------------- .165" -------------------- .222"

Advertised G1 BC's----------------- .631 --------------------- .696

These are only rough measurements with less than lab quality equipment, so take a few thousands for error.

As I load and test over the next few months I will report data and field tests here.

Broz,

Thanks for the info.

Would the hybrid theoretically work better in a 300 Wby with the longer freebore? I had thought you had implied that once before, but just confirming. I'll be working up 300 Wby loads very soon.

I say yes, you will be able to push them that fast. I just shot a bunch of the 250 gr 338 Hybrids and I like the short bearing surface of the hybrids. I think it will allow for more velocity and better down range trajectory. I think I will be able to push the 250 bergers as fast as the 225 Barnes TTSX's
Thanks for your help before, I ended up seating them at .070 off the lands.

I ran some basic numbers to 900 yards, about where one would hit 1900 fps which should be a safe number to ensure proper expansion at least for their VLD bullets, and even with lower velocities the 215 looks pretty good. How is the hybrid supposed to expand on big game and at what velocity?

Well I have never had any issues with the 210's in Wby chamberings with freebore. But the Hybrids ae said to be less sensitive to seating depth so this should work well with freebore rifles. If I was loading for a 300 Wby I sure would give these a look.

Not so much in energy, but the higher BC should result in less drift and lower loss in velcity. Win, win!

Plus, we have already takes truck loads of game with Hybrids, so my expansion testing will simply start with a few antelope.

Jeff....I picked some up the other day to compare to my SXR's when I get my 30/375 S.I. together (soon I hope)! Keep us posted on what you come up with......Rich

Michelle Gallagher from Berger said at the begining of April. When I find out for sure I will let you know. I can't wait to get some more and do a little more testing to come up with a good long range hunting load.

Jeff, I think you'll find that you can run the 215 not only as fast as you did the 210 but possibly faster with the same pressures. I discovered this in my RUM. I believe it's a combination between a gentler hybrid nose angle entering the rifling and most of all the difference in bearing surfaces between the 210VLD and the 215 Hybrid.
Berger's tech data states that the bearing surfaces are as follows:

210 VLD .540"
215 Hybrid .419"

I will be working up a load for a friend this weekend in a 26" 300 Winchester Mag with the 215's. We will be trying H1000 and possibly Retumbo. Data shows we should be in the 2800fps neighborhood. I'll let you know what we come up with:)
