Today was opening day for our hunt...and 20 minutes in... A huge 6 point was on the next bluff at 723 yards. I've been passing on some really nice bucks during previous years because I was only shooting out to 300. So this year I was determined to remedy that and have spent a great deal of time at the range shooting out to 600 yards, getting my dope, developing loads, working on 3" groups as a goal and doing quite nicely.
So today... First thing... 723 yards and no way to close the distance. So my brother and I decided to attempt to maneuver east, climb a ridge and try to cut off this beaut in a saddle he was moving towards. We were on foot and he was on hoof...you can pretty much guess who won that race! So there we are when this 2 point drops over the west ridge a little over 300 yards away and 50 degrees up to our right. It angled towards us and the broke east towards a line of thick quaking aspen and bramble. My brother called the yardage.. 246. He was moving fast and I was about to break a shot when he just stops. A second to readjust and I let a 168gr bergers vld go. He folded and did not get up again. My brother kept glass on it while I made the now 40 plus degree ciimb to the bucks location... And I found it DOA.
Now you might be thinking...why didn't I give chase on the 6 point? Well... When the world basically hands me a buck in the first hour of our hunt, I'm not going to be so arrogant as to turn the opportunity away. I've done that and gone the rest of the season without so much as seeing a buck again. So... It's meat on the table and a smile on my face. I'll be practicing to a thousand this summer and I guarantee that the next big one I see is laughing at me from 1100 .
Nothing better than to be out hunting. There's always a little humor to be found in it all.
