That "338 RUM" stamp is NOT factory Remington.

Looks like an R700 action that has had a 3 position safety installed, and a custom barrel.

If the action is from 1984, it was not originally an Ultra Magnum action (the 300 RUM line was released in 1999 and the 338 RUM in 2002), so the feed rails are probably not cut for the 404 Jeffrey parent case, probably started out as a .300WM or some other belted magnum, so the feed rails are too narrow for the Ultra Mag case. So it might be a single shot.

I say shoot it before you rebarrel. You can always alter the feed rails a touch. Or live with a single shot.

And not "caliber" (which is bore diameter). It is "chambering" (what cartridge it accepts).

I'm curious about this size of the bolt face. The three position safety would have been about $160.00 and three hours roughly to fit it. The non jeweled bolt is reminiscent of my Rem 700 mountain. I hope the investment wasn't substantial.

Total investment was about $600. Just trying to figure out the caliber.

So you bought it for action since you are re-barrelling it? If that's the case, I say press on re-barreling it.

I recently purchased a Remington 700, 338 RUM, or so I thought….

When I received it, 338 RUM ammo did not fit the receiver. The barrel was stamped 338 RUM but the rounds did not fit the receiver.

After chamber casting the barrel it is infact a 338 RUM. The receiver is not 338 RUM.

It is stamped as a Remington 700. Build date is Sept 1984. Is a long action. Any suggestions on definitively determining the caliber?

300 RUM squeezes into the receiver. In any case I'll be changing the barrel.

When you say the rounds did not fit the receiver - what do you really mean (because you say you had a chamber cast done and it is indeed a 338 RUM chamber, then you say the round squeezes into the receiver.

So, they did not fit in the magazine? They barely fit through the ejection port? They case won't fit in the bolt face?

Changing the barrel, why? The gunsmith says it is indeed chambered for a 338 RUM.

No, you are trying to figure out the cartridge that the barrel is chambered for. ;)

I think perhaps are misunderstanding how Remington 700s are configured to work with different cartridges.

Remington makes 3 action lengths. Short, Long, and Extreme Long. The 338 RUM is made on a Long action, not an extra long action. I am 95+% sure the magazine box is the same within each action length. The bolt face is different based on cartridge as well as the follower (silver plate that the cartridge rides on) is different for many cartridge types.

In other words their is no such a thing a 338 RUM, 300 Win Mag, or 30-06 receiver the are all the same receiver. They will have different bolt faces and different followers.

I think you may simple need a different follower.

As @lancetkenyon noted in#15, it might be chambered for a single shot.

Doesn't make sense, they use basicly the same brass case with same c.o.a.l. --just different neck/caliber

Rem700 rum is built in a standard
long action with the feed rails opened up just a bit and the proper bolt face...I too am betting it was built as a single shot, but if you open up the feed rails and use the proper mag box/spring/follower it would work as a multi shot rum just fine.

But overall loaded cartridge length is the same, and the body is the same diameter so if the 300 fits in the mag box, why wouldn't the 338?

Is the brass for both New or Fired???

And as mentioned was this a single feed gun??? Apparently the receiver was not modified ( properly) to handle the Rum ??
