Anyone with a high-recoiling rifle ever observe your scope
slipping in the plastic inserts ?

OK, thanks gents.
A couple of times I put one layer of scotch tape between the rings
and the scope, only because I'm leery of metal-to-metal contact
in this interface. I'm also leery of squeezing the scope body too
hard with the rings.
I've never used the Zee inserts but I was worried that if not clamped
down enough there would not be enough friction to hold the scope.
I'm probably overthinking this and making a mountain out of a
molehill.

It's the inserts that are providing more contact surface and the need for lapping the rings.

You can torque them down quite a bit with out scope damage. I usually have about 32th of a inch of space on each side.
