I had a CZ550 Safari Magnum in .416 Rigby that I shot for a while and even carried to Montrose, CO, since my Dad basically insisted on carrying my personally built CZ-24 in .35 Whelen (which he bowled two Elk over with), leaving me with the heavy gun to carry. Short story of things, snow storms + CZs = RUST, and I had bought a Ruger RSM also in .416 Rigby and decided to turn the CZ with its 8 oz. set trigger into a TRUE LR ELK RIG.

After talking to Kirby and Dave Viers, I had a REALLY HARD CHOICE, but I wanted the .338 AX, so Kirby it was ( Home Page ). He has had it for almost two years, working it in between other projects and commitments (he primarily does custom actions, and I can not blaim him for it, but I had a fondness for the big CZ Magnum Mauser and its reliablity), HOWEVER, I can not be more satisfied with the outcome and I have not scoped it, or fired it yet---Heck, Kirby still has it, but by the pics he sent me; OMG! DREAMS DO COME TRUE!

Now the old CZ Safari Magnum that started its life with the European Hogback wooden factory stock (mine is an EARLY CZ .416), is stocked in the CZ HET stock, with an additional Tubb Recoil lug (the Magnum Mauser's lug is under the gas port in the side of the front action ring), a Mike Rock 5R 1-9.4 twist Marine Tactical Contour) , and throated for the long CZ box (3.85"), the action, bolt, AND rail were Cerakoted, and one of Kirby's Pain killer brakes was added. I actually installed (hand contoured and threaded) the tactical handle originally intended for a Remington Action. The rail is CZ's 20 MOA rail that comes with a new HET; but make no bones about it, this is a HET killer!!!

Hopefully Kirby won't mind but I wanted to share this email of my Virgin AX getting indoctrinated by its maker, plus it shows what a great fella Kirby is to work with (just try to give him time as he is back logged, however as you can see in the photos, the results are no less than spectacular. I feel like a Sixteen year old whose Dad bought them a Porsche. I would have preferred a custom action, but I still "want" a .375 Allen Magnum, so there is my excuse for that one! :)

Kirby's report from my semi-custom action (trued by Kirby):

"Well, its been a while but I was finally able to get out to the range today to test your rifle. For the past two weeks or more we have had either blizards, rain or extreme wind. This week alone we have had peak wind speeds of 59, 64 and 71 mph!!!! Typical springtime in Montana.

Anyway, this morning it was dead calm so I jumped on it.

Set up at 1050 yards. It took four shots to get the NF test scope to match up with impact and then let the barrel cool. Then shot several three shot groups. Very happy to say the rifle shot extremely well, easily meeting my 1/2 moa accuracy requirement with most groups fired. Worst group was just under 1 moa and again most were right around 1/2 moa.

The load I used was not a FULL throttle load but more what I call my accuracy load. This uses 96.0 gr Retumbo under the 300 gr SMK and a Fed-215 primer, I will have to get the exact OAL for you when I get back up to the shop. I can not remember exactly what I used for your throat length and want to make sure I get it right before giving you a number.

Generally I recommend starting at 94.0 gr of Retumbo and work up from there. Depending on some lots of Retumbo and specific barrels, some rifles will top out at around 97-98.0 gr and others will go up to as high as 100-101.0 gr. Velocity potential should be somewhere in the 2900-2950 fps level for most barrels of your length. Obviously keep an eye on any obvious pressure signs and if you see them stop.

I have to be out of the shop tomorrow but will do my best to get your rifle shipped on Monday for you. I attached some pictures for you to see your rifle. Turned out very nice. Very comfortable to shoot, very mild recoil. The trigger has a slight tick in it right before let off on 75% of the shots fired. Did not really seem to effect the shootability of the rifle and the more I shot the rifle the less obvious it was.

Kirby
ALLEN PRECISION"

The last pic should show the Tubb Recoil lug, and keep in mind there is a Magnum Mauser lug that also carries the load of the barrel. Now, I just need a Nightforce!!! HAD TO SHARE, I am too excited!!! Jeff

God that's awesome, I love that action. What did you do with the old "Hog back"?

The old factory wooden Hogback stock actually SPLIT around the grip within about 50-75 firings of my .416. After that I ordered a McMillian CZ Express stock(with their special thicker fill for heavy kickers), and as soon as the CZ HET came out, I sold the McMillian and ordered the HET stock from CZ directly.

The Ergos for me are EXCELLENT. I have a 14.25 LOP with my long arms, and the HET stock has a 14.5 LOP, a very wide and long Limbsaver, and my long finger sits on the trigger perfectly. I actually fired it a few times while it was still a .416 Rigby, and it managed the recoil much more effectively than even the McMillian, which after specifically ordering a LOP from McMillian at 14.25, it came in at 13.25' and did not fit me well.

Before Kirby added his touch, I had already lapped the bolt body into the action rails to get a nice smooth bolt glide.......I can't wait to feel it with the Cerakote!!! I actually should have noted that ALL the factory CZ metal was Cerakoted, but I figured that folks would figure it out. Does anyone know how to edit your signature? I need to add a new caliber. HA!

Very good looking rifle. What does that thing weigh?

Thank you for the compliments every one; she may not be all that fancy by using a factory action, but she will be one of a kind for sure and should out perform CZ's HET ( CZ-USA -> CZ 550 Magnum H.E.T ) easily.

ALSO, THANK YOU JOSH for your service to our Country so that I and all of your Compatriots may enjoy our hobby---both Target and Hunting!!! I have SO MUCH respect for our Service men and women, but I pray that all who are called defend the Constitution, and not any UN-Constitutional President, regardless of what Political Party they might be affiliated with. God Bless you Sir!

As for the weight; it will be much heavier that a Sendero, I can tell you that! Kirby still has it, and it is ready for shipment, I just don't have it in MY hands yet or I would actually weight it for you.

The action is beefy, the stock weights about the same as a Sendero + a few ounces, however with the MTU contour barrel that is where most of the weight is. If you go to Mike Rock's site and go to barrel contours (Here: Barrel Contours « www.rockcreekbarrels.com ) and look at the Tactical contours you will see that the breech is 1.25" for 5", then it tapers to .900" at 29".

I told Kirby to give me all the burn length he could so I am assuming that he cut and crowned it at 29" (it's delivered at 30" so you can do just that), THEN Kirby installed one of his Pain Killer brakes.

That particular barrel is more akin to an AXLE, as I have a 1-7" Lilja HV contour on my 6mm Ackley (which is surprisingly accurate shooting the 107 gr. Sierra Matchkings at 1k, as long as the wind is less than 5mph).

For this build, and with this action I not only wanted to squeeze all the performance into it, but I wanted a heavy field gun, and the ultimate in extraction reliability of the Magnum Mauser action, so that I can truly reach out and get some meat as steathily as possible.

My uncle has a farm where I can stretch it out to 1600 yards easily (I'll sit on the opposite hill and glass while my cousins hunt, and will take out those wise older, BIG bucks that are too smart for a stalk hunt). My Uncle can't wait to see me shoot it, but he doesn't want to shoot it........although it will be less than his '06 with all the weight and muzzle break. His eyes aren't too great anyway, but I am sure that him hearing a 300 gr. Sierra hitting my 1" thick 12"x12" gong at that distance is going to make both of us giddy!

Very nice looking forward to hear how she performs for you. I thank you for your kind words also.

My kind words come straight from the heart.......I pray for ALL of y'all in harm's way, and am thankful when I hear of a Service person coming home!

I can't wait to update everyone........I am getting over a back fusion with Titanium rods and all, and then I will have to buy a Nightforce; the best scope I have at the moment is a 6.5-20x50 Vari-X III with the old 1" tube. Believe me, I did not have Kirby build that rifle to put a lesser scope on it! :^) Still a Leupold fan, and own several, all 1" tubes, but a Nightforce with a Gunwerks turret is the way that I am headed---just haven't decided on the magnification of Nightforce I want---I am leaning toward the 8-32x56 but am open to any model as long as I am back working and can wallet the scope.

Nice looking setup. I really like my Nightforce scope.

Still having a hard time deciding WHICH Nightforce.

I am preferring the M.O.A.R. or NP-R1 reticles, but am unsure if I want a 5.5-22x56 or a 8-32x56. The rifle will primarily used for long range deer and targets, perhaps with a second Elk hunt in the future.

ANY OPINIONS are APPRECIATED.

Also, I am wanting a Gunwerks BDC turret after seeing how effective they work. Does anyone have any experience with their turrets while we are on the topic???

As for the discussion, I prefer to think in MOAs instead of MILs. Just seems easier to my brain in MOAs. Not saying that I am correct, mind you.

I have used Greybull Precision Leupold Scopes with Turrets and they work good. If you se a G7 Ballistic Range finder it will give you the MOA based on distance. I really like the G7 and it s more precise than turrets I think. My opinion only.

Ironically, I had already been looking at the G7 Rangefinder. IT WILL be the purchase right after I find the correct Nightforce scope.

I do not intend on going back to Montrose, CO for my dream 6 pt. Elk "unequipped" again. My first trip, showed me where my weaknesses were; shooting well was not one of them as I shot competition from the tender age of 8, but I did not have a range finder, and even though I had a ballistics chart, "guessing" a range that is unknown in that kind of terrain can result in many feet in the missed shot, as I found out when I launched a few at a 5 pt.

When you drop $2500 on a hunt, it is regrettable that one doesn't know what you HAVE to have, to make the hunt successful; regardless of the range.

THANKS SO MUCH for your feedback on the G7 rangefinder!!!
