Best powder for 300 Win Mag 190-215?

I haven't gotten out to the range yet, but my ladder test loads for my new 5R Milspec .300WM are using IMR 7828 SSC, and Berger 210 VLD's.

For the Berger 215 Hybrids, I believe the book max is 75 grains of H1000. I am at 76 grains with a velocity of 2865 fps and no pressure signs, and I've heard of up to 78 grains being used if you can load fairly long.

Two good powders for the 300WM with those bullets are H1000 and Retumbo. I have found that Retumbo gives me increased velocities (50-100FPS) in my Milspec 700. ES and temperature stability with both powders is excellent.

76grns of H1000 and 208grn amax has given me amazing results. Cutting the same hole at 200 yards out of my stock barrel rem 700 sps. This load has me really excited. I seat my Amax's about .030" off the lands and have seen no pressure signs.

That is literally my exact load as well. I'm clocking 2910 FPS out of my 26" barreled shilen select barrel on win70 action and shooting in the .3's.

I tried the 190gn SMK with H1000 and CCI250's back in Aug2010, in Georgia. It was 94 deg. that day with a heat index of 110 deg. I loaded from 79.0 to 80.5gn and velocity averaged from 3078fps to 3148fps. Largest group (79.5) was .522" and smallest (79.0) was .142".

Currently (2014-15) shooting the 208gn AMax and 210gn Bergers. Using 81.0gn of Retumbo w/CCI250's. These two are tit for tat in my rifle. Accuracy is almost identical at just under .4" and veloctiy for the AMax was 3072fps, the Bergers came in at 3073fps.

Installed a muzzle break and recoil pad in 2013, as the 190gn's, even in a 12-13lb rifle, were brutal. These two items are priceless when shooting the heavy pills, IMO. Work your way in to these loads, your mileage may vary. JohnnyK.

H4831SC is my go to powder for most of my hunting rifles esp. for the .300 Win Mag and Montana's extreme weather conditions.

For 190 Berger VLD, my current accuracy load is 75.5 H4831SC, CCI250, Win brass, .020" off the lands, at 3043 FPS. This load yielded a bull elk at 931 yards in 2013.

Good luck in your load development and happy safe shooting/hunting.

What is your barrel length , and what brand of brass are you loading ?
