Years ago I was talking to some of my 1000 BR buddies who were doing the 2000 - 3000 groundhog thing. This was back before Berger had the "Hybrids". They shot the 240 SMK because it transitioned into the subsonic speeds without a bunch of drama. They were NOT shooting the bigger (30-378 sized stuff) cases...... but 308 and 30-06 sized stuff. Would that statement be true today, or do the Berger Hybrids handle the ride better? I am thinking about shooting some 2000 yard comps and have a bunch of 215 and 230 Hybrids (300 WBY) along with a bunch of 240 SMK's. I Also have an EDGE in a hunting platform that runs the 300 Bergers at 2960 with RL33. I have plinked at these ranges at rocks etc.....but never on paper.

I am trying to come up with ways to NOT SPEND MORE MONEY. It would be great to chamber up a 33/37 XC tube, but with that comes brass, dies. bullets, new bolt, etc.... Just cant swing it at this time .

Thanks,
Tod

I can tell you this... you're not making hits at 2 miles with a .308. it's not like people haven't tried. I have. My bullet was going 300 fps at 1760y. So....if that's 50% of the distance....
Maybe if you switched to a .300 prc or something of the sorts and you can use your 200-230 sierras, load for it, etc

I am not shooting a 308......the PD shooters were shooting them years ago. I have about a dozen 300 WBY tubes for my 1000 yard LG and HG comp guns. I figure at 4500 feet elavation and 2950 - 3050 FPS with the 215 and 230 Hybrids I SHOULD stay fast enough at 2000 yards to avoid any issues. My 338 Edge should be fine.....I hope. But just wondering about how the 240 acts at distance. I do know that some bullets work great transitioning to subsonic...others not so much. Just wondering if anyone has any actual experience at distance with the SMK

My experience with Berger bullets out to 1700 yards, that is the longest range near me, have been great with multiple calibers.

I tend to run a faster twist rate when I can. E.g. if the bullet wants a 1-10, I run a 1-9 twist...etc.

If I am using an existing barrel with a traditional twist, I shoot a lower grain bullet and push it faster to be ballistically equal with the heavier bullet. E.g. 260 REM and 6.5 Creedmore are both 1-8 twist and I run 130 OTM Hybrids in lieu of 140 Hybrids.

Most of my shooting is done between 600-700 ft of altitude. So far, this has worked for me.

I'm running a 1/10 twist 338 Edge with 300 gr.berger Otm at 2849 ft.per.sec and have hits at 2053 yrds so far . My adj base should be here tomorrow!

Rum Man
Good to know. I am not worried about "making hits"..... I have made hits out to 1900 myself. We will be shooting a 3 target agg....5 shots each target.......so it's a group and score thing. Groups go to hell in a hurry if you get near transonic area.

Crunching the numbers, my 300 WBYS with the 215 and 230 and 338 EDGE with either the 300 OTM or Elite Hunter will stay above 1300 FPS at 2000 yards at 4500 fet ele and 70 Deg F. I just don't have enough experience with groups at that range.

Thanks for the replys,
Tod
