I have an itch to buy a new rifle and keep questioning myself on what caliber. Here is what I currently have

22-250
220 swift- Which is on the chopping block to pay for new rifle
25-06
280 AI

Thought maybe something in a 30 caliber other than a 308. Have had several and keep getting rid of them. My 25-06 is my go to for just about everything. WAnt something new to take to Montana this year for a mulie hunt. What would you purchase and why. Not big on punishing recoil. I also reload

how about a 6.5?

6.5 creedmoor is fun to shoot and doesn't hurt the shoulder. Enough power to take deer at 700 yards or so. Components are cheap and the factory ammo shoots great if you need it in a pinch.

6.5x284 would be my next choice, if you didn't have the 280 AI it would be my first choice.

My .02

7mm RemMag. The ultimate deer and all-around mammal-masher. :D

Seriously though, work up a good load using some Berger 168 VLD's or 180's and they'll be droppin like a freight train hit them. The 2 I shot last year did.

Seems to me you have a lot of bases covered from 7mm and down.....I would go big. 300 or 338 RUM, 338 Lapua or one of the wildcats based on either of these. Put a good brake on it and it will be like shooin your 280. Mostly I shoot a 22-250, 7x57 or my 280AI.........but I still have a big soft spot for my 300 RUM. :)

Turn you 25-06 into a 6.5 Sherman and you can get rid of it AND your 280 A.I. You can shoot the 160 Matrix at 3100' and load down to 75 grain at !!!!!!!!!! This covers the 25 and the A.I. capabilities. Now you have room for a bigger bore like a .308 or .338, and you have all you bases covered.............Rich

The .300 Ackley would also make a nice addition to your collection filling a very niche gap you seem to be missing. Or a 7mm STW...Everybody needs one of those. :D

Like Rich said, you could also convert your .25-06 into a .25-06 AI and your .280 AI into a 6.5 Sherman.

Well I decided to go with a tikka 300 WSM despite the recoil

Not to bad for first load devolpment. Using Berger 168 grain VLD bullets

What will be the purpose of this new caliber? You might look at the 338 Federal as a good brush and medium range rifle which you can get in a AR style rifle also.
