New caliber for me, questions and suggestions

So I have an AR and a Weatherby in 30-06. They're both pretty accurate, 2 of the most accurate guns I've ever owned. I like trying to shoot small groups, and I love to shoot long range. I'd eventually like to try for a mile.*

That being said, I have a hankering for a new gun that fills a spot between the .223 and 30-06. I want a caliber that has near zero recoil, that I can watch my impacts, that has factory ammo available *(but I will reload), will shoot 3/4 minute groups, but will still shoot a thousand yards(or more). I also want to suppress it eventually so to be easily able to do that would be nice.

I've been browsing the internet and came across the Remington SPS that has the 20 inch heavy barrel that's already threaded in .243. I know the ballistics for 243 are pretty sweet, but I've never shot one. Would the .243 meet the recoil and thousand yard capablew criteria? Being threaded, makes it suppressor ready. I'm thinking a 20 inch heavy barrel 243 with a suppressor would make a pretty awesome coyote/pig/antelope/ deer gun. Anyone have experience with this particular offering from Remington. Are they typically accurate?

What other options pop into your head? I know 6.5 Creedmoor is out there, but every manufacturer seems to be very proud of their guns. I'm just not able to spend a thousand bucks on just the rifle for the Tikka or Howas in a bull barrel 6.5 Creedmoor.*

Thanks for taking the time to read and for your suggestions. I know the "which rifle" question come up a lot, but I tried to refine the search a little

Yes the 243 is capable of 1000 yards and beyond. However, with a factory 243 your plagued by the slow twist barrel which won't allow you to shoot the high bc 105+ grain bullets. Not sure how you feel about savage but there a model that's a cabelas exclusive that comes in 6.5 Creedmoor and that's less than 600 bucks. It's a heavy barrel and it comes threaded. I was never a savage guy til I actually bought one. Now I'm a believer. Good thing about a factory 6.5 Creedmoor it comes with a 1:8 twist so you can shot all the way up to the new 147 eld-m match which is a heck of a bullet. So if you are wanting get a 6.5 cm..... get a savage. You won't regret it. Another option is to build on a Savage action. That's how I did my Creedmoor and it's a incredible. No gunsmith required on a Savage you can do it yourself. Just another option. Do you reload? That's another factor to consider

Buy a Remington 700 short action and build a 6.5X47. Steel to 1000 yds is no problem, with almost no recoil. My X47 is heavy at 15.5 lbs complete. With a 4 port brake there really is almost no recoil. Every time I shoot that gun I am amazed at the performance of that little case. 130 Berger at 3000 fps.

Your forgetting he said he doesn't have 1000 to spend on a rifle. With that being said with the event of lapua making 6.5 creed brass with the small primer pocket why would he do a x47?

The new Lapua brass will great for sure. I like the X47 just to be different. Don't need to be a fan boy and get caught up in all the creedmore craze. The X47 runs so close to the Creed and 260 I don't see why it is not an option. Many times my custom X47 from RBROS is out performing them from what I read on here. The X47 gets left out a lot so I felt I would mention it as a option. I am sure you may be a bit biased with your user name. But that is good; we should all shoot what we like. Would be boring if we all shot the same thing.

We'll actually I'm not biased anymore. Used to get caught up in the craze as you say. I'm may be wrong here but I sounds like he's on a budget. Which I can relate to not all of us can afford custom rifle that cost thousands of dollars. I'm just thinking on a budget the 6.5 CM or even the 260 (just so you all won't call me a "supporter") would both probably be better options. Now on a performance scale the extra capacity in the Creed or 260 case will out run a x47 given both are in the same barrel length. Actually there's alot of guys (including myself) that can push a 140 to 2900 or better. But just because we can do it doesn't mean we should do it. So if he's looking to squeeze ever drop of performance out of that category of cartridge then the 6.5 cm or 260 would both be better. I'm not knocking the x47. It's a great cartridge. I understand we all like something different. I'm just trying to give a logical answer to the OP's needs.

I do agree that budget wise the Creed will be more flexible. Factory gun options as well as factory ammo. But with factory ammo you will no doubt lose the Lapua brass option. For what some factory guns cost I feel collecting parts slowly in the classifieds and building is a better option sometimes. But yes this hobby of ours can get very expensive. I know first hand being in Canada and trying to source parts. Gotta add 35% to everything right now with our weak dollar!

I agree I built mine piece by piece. Took me a year to get the parts all together. If he does decide to go custom route he can actually go with his original plan and shoot a 243. The 243 with a 110 smk is a very impressive cartridge that will out run both our 6.5s unless I step up to a 147 then it's a even ball game.
