I forgot the name of the permit that you have to have in California for National Forest , mostly So Cal to even park on a National forest road to camp, hunt, fish, etc.

Adventure permit. was $35 back when. Clinton imposed to pay for National Forest maintenance. Lol. They stopped maintaining Forestry roads right after.

This is how it starts. 1st by the state or feds saying you just need to get a free permit. Then 2nd it always turns into you need to pay for said permit.
Its public property why the hell do I need a extra permit fee or any other stupid requirements to use public property?
In my veiw it becomes more about controlling people. Oh please Mr government agency can I use this or do that.
Same thing with concealed carry permits or a firearm tax stamp.
Those are not in the constitution but yet they get the population under control with it by begging for rights that the Government has zero authority over.

When non-hunters are required to pay for their wildlife viewing on public hunting land, could they have more influence on hunting policy?

I'd just as soon leave it as is, hunters paying for the management of widlife. Like we always have.

They tried this in Virginia a number of years ago on access boat ramps. The the non-fishermen were outraged and it quietly went away.

Have similar here in Eastern Wa, I call it the discover tax. $45 Allows you on to state land for use as you stated. When it first came out I asked a friend who was a forest service law enforcement officer how this new permit's work'n out since the money doesn't even go towards the state? He said he's been emptying his citation packs daily, no one is complying during the first couple hunting seasons.

It's the same thing for marriage licenses, why do I need "permission" from the state to get married. In fact until very very recently there were no (Federal-none) state laws requiring it. But the sheeple just followed the norms only since about 1930, soon 100 years. Prior to that there were no such licences "needed".

I understand your feelings, however there are other areas that are more crowded that the state avoids. Why not tax the touring, triathlon, and off highway bicycles that travel state hwys, BLM, national Forests. I believe it would make a larger impact.

But, ultimately I'd rather our legislators manage the state budget better and avoid adding more taxes all together.

I'm old enough to have seen our state move from free public lands to let's add taxes on to our taxes to use public lands. An area I could walk in to hunt predators to now I need to file a access permit to use will most likely end up a pay to hunt area in the future.

My family use to gaze animals on the Cannan Mtns in southern Utah which is now limited to access on foot or horseback has become an act of Congress required for a rancher to check on their livestock to use a four wheeler or ranch pickup. It's more affordable to give up the fight than too pay fines to continue a ranching tradition. Especially when the federal and state governments use your own tax dollars to beat you out of your leases and public lands.

A local trapshooting club was approached by the village recreation association about using their land and clubhouse for a couple of volleyball courts... to be used for a summer outdoor volleyball league....NO PROBLEM as long as all participants joined the club so the Club's insurance would cover liability for injuries.....It wasn't long before it was the "Volleyball and Trapshooting Club"
The Volleyball majority controlled all voted upon issues and Trapshooting was never again a priority for any available funds.....YIKES!

I don't like how Utah gouges non residents on license and tag fees. This year will almost double. I tried to burn my deer points last year with 16. Couldn't even draw a marginal area. Wyoming, Colorado, Arizona, Montana, California do the same. Nevada isn't real bad. You know why they do it ? Because they can. I have a lot of $ invested in licenses and points in a lot of states that I'll never draw. Points... lol. There a money making ripoff if there ever was one.
That's a whole different topic.

A lot of the herds are hurting in Montana. We're not "gouging" NRs enough.

Money isn't going to help deer with winter kill, drought, CWD, etc..
Mule deer herds are way down in a few states. Parts of Wyoming received bad winter kill 2024-2025 winter. Especially the west side of the state. The best area the Wyoming range and Salt River range herds had 80% kill. Game and Fish refused to emergency feed them . Same old reasons.
I guess they didn't want to spend any of the millions of dollars they get from non res fees.
