Albeit I never owned the 7WSM, had everything around it. I think it would be the ultimate deer/elk cartridge. I'd jump all over it!

I had a Browning A-bolt for years as my elk and deer cartridge. It did everything I needed it to do and shot my handloads just under an inch.168 gr Begers with H4831sc. I had to use the dremmel on the inside of the magazine to get them to fit.

Let the hater's hate and the naysayers scream. Been shooting the 7WSM is just an awesome 7mm. It's nothing to neck up Peterson 270 brass and fifty will last that barrel and you the rest of your hunting life. I have been shooting the 7 WSM for 13 yrs and it's my favorite 7mm so start the yelling

Did you have to seat the 168s close to the lands?
I see 4831 sc frequently while looking at load data. Did you try H1000 or Retumbo as well? I have these 3 powders as well.

Great to hear that your son is getting back into it, any idea of what real world he'll be doing for hunts, how much he'll be shooting and to what ranges on a consistent basis?

He was invited to hunt 3rd rifle elk season near Steamboat,Co. A friend of his moved back to CO about 4 or 5 years ago. Him and his dad have been hunting private property (cattle ranch)for a number of years. Backs up to BLM land and another ranch. The invite was extended to me. I think my son will make this an annual trip. If I keep in good graces, I think I will keep tagging along!
I am 72 and still very active. As is my son. Although I try note to show my age
.I will have to scope out the area, but looks like open range. To be honest, my son is very busy with his business and young family. Starting out, I think the amount of shooting will be at a minimum. On a good note, my 15 year old grandson wants to go deer hunting. Happy times ahead.
This trip became available after I was successful in a draw for elk in Wyoming. Going to be a busy season.
I am very fortunate to have an understanding wife. I will be gone a month as I will have to fish my way west!!
I chose it bc it is the easiest way to get good brass for a WSM that shoots 7mm bullets. It wouldn't be worth it to rechamber a factory barrel, but if you were chambering a barrel for the first time it may make sense.

That's way cool that you get to hunt with him, cherish every moment! Doesn't really matter what he carries you guys will have fun. I'm 67 and have 8 G-kids and will become a GG come Christmas time, they all love the outdoors and we spend a Lot of time at it
As much as I love the 7's (my mains are my old 7 Mashburn Super and a 7 WSM. Both with 8 twists) to me for your son it makes a lot of sense to go main stream 06, 270, 308, 7 Rem Mag etc. His time is probably tight and life is a lot easier just using factory for those guns. Boring I know but it will make his very busy life a lot easier.
That said, my 7 WSM is a short action Model 70 stainless with a 23" Brux 8 twist on it. I have it in a McMillan Compact with Edge fill. Mine is threaded for an Omega 300, Talley lightweights and a 3-10 NF/SHV. It's a joy to shoot off the deck, bench, offhand or whatever. It's a freaking shooting machine! Weighs 9 lbs all up and ready to roll.
It shoots many bullets into tiny bug holes and totally loves and dotes on the 162 Horn ELD-M. Last group we shot with it @ a quarter mile went 1.25" for 3 rounds.
I also love the 150 NBT and the 160 Sierra HPBT. The 145 Hammer is a drill as well.
Regarding brass, you'll find Win or Fed from time to time, when you do grab all you can. Personally I find this plain Jane brass to do all I ask of it so I don't sweat it in regards to getting other high end brass for it.

We were at the range last week. He was shooting my Model 70 30-06 Featherweight. It is a bit snappy due to it's light weight. Next time he comes to visit, he will shoot my 7RM Sako L61R Finbear with a McMillan stock. I think he will shoot this much better. I consider this my workhorse. It likes Accubond 160's

I have been mule deer hunting wheat fields in Eastern Washington for um.. a number of years. We practice by shooting plates/rocks out to 1300 yards but our shots on animals are normally 300 - 500 yards.
My factory but bedded Winchester 70 Coyote 7wsm, 150 Berger Classic Hunter handloads, dialable Nightforce NX8 scope, range finding binoculars and good dope does the job well.
Like Dogz said before. Remington and Winchester brass comes up from time to time. Plain Jane brass does fine. Stock up when you see it.

I've got my Dad's post 64 Fwt in 06, wood stock it's plenty snappy as you say. As well, my G-Pa's P64/Model 70 Fwt 06, this is in a Bansner. It's recoil isn't near as bad for me as Dad's is.
