I am stuck in analysis paralysis and looking for you all to help straighten me out.
I have a Bighorn TL-3 short action, and a 1:8" twist #3 barrel blank that is 29", or 28" finished length. I am willing to cut this down as far as 20".
The goal is to be magazine fed, shoot 175 class bullets and have 2,200 fps and 1,500ft-lb to at least 500 yards. Both of these cartariges can achieve this in a 24" tube. If I go off load data at 24", I can reach that threshold at 525ish yards for the SAUM and roughly 700 yards with the Sherman. I have H-4350, and Retumbo on hand, and if reasonable I would start with Retumbo. H-1000 is starting to show up from time to time as well and that may be another powder option.
For the SAUM, it looks like it is easier to find someone who can chamber my barrel, the dies are a little cheaper, but getting brass appears to be impossible.
Sherman, most likely would need to do a reamer rental and find someone who will chamber it. Not having a ton of luck there, maybe you folks can point me to someone I can call to discuss the details. Dies are available as is the brass. It looks like there are some changes in flight to the sherman case that dies are in the process of being made however the reamers may not be out there yet for these updates? Do I go with the old case design or wait for the new ones?
I would like to get about 100 pieces of brass for either chambering and that should last a practical time in either instance.
This gun will be used as a hunting rig so barrel life is not very high on the list. Factory ammo is not a consideration either. If anyone has any recommendations either way please let me know.
