7mm rem mag 140 VLD. For hunting whitetail?

Anyone with experience hunting with 7mm rem mag 140 VLD?

Lots of information for 168 grain but not 140.

Best I could get the168s to group OK, but not fantastic and I've just completed a ladder test with the 140 grain. Out of 10 shots fired, 5 left a ragged hole. So I'm thinking I will use 140 grain.

I'll be hunting Virginia, Kentucky, Florida and Texas. So shots may be close or several hundred yards away.

Any real world experience with people who have used 140??

I have had great accuracy with the 140's . I was drawn for mule deer and will be using the 168's for them. I was going to use the 140s on coues they are small. but I was not drawn for them.

If you had 5 shots in 1 ragged hole @ 400 yards, load them up and pound a deer! I think 500-600 yards would be fine for the 7mm 140 HVLD.

Personally, I shoot the 180 Hybrid out of mine. but putting the bullet where is goes is #1. If the 140s do that for you, go for it. Scream them out at 3100+ and it will put a whooping on deer.

I have used bullet weights from 100 to 215 on big bodied mule deer with great results. With most being in the 100-140 range driven fast. 488 yards with a 100gr. .257" bullet was a slam dunk. The .257" 115gr. pushed at 3400+ is my favorite for deer under 800 yards. I hope to have my 14 year old use a 6.5mm 140 this year on her deer.

Beyond 600yds the lower BC's of the 140's will begin to show but if your rifle doesn't shoot the 168's well it's a moot point anyhow.

I shot 140gr bullets almost exclusively in my 7mm RM's over the course of 20 plus years and they were absolutely deadly medicine on white tails, pronghorns and coyotes with my longest kills being just over 800yds.

Shoot em and don't look back. I've loaded the 140vld varmint in my 284 and it shot way better than the 180 vld for me. It had noticeably less recoil and was way faster, obviously. I think for your deer the 140 shooting bug holes will do anything you want it to and more. Think on this... lots of people kill deer with the 243 and 90gr, 270 and 130gr. no reason a 140 7mm scooting right along won't lay them out flat.

I prefer the 168's. Had a Hornady 139 SST grenade on a deer at ~100 yards once when I was 16. Found the deer, but the meat was mangled up pretty bad. After that, I swapped to 160+gr bullets and haven't had an issue in almost 15 years.

I've used the 140 grain partition out of my 7 mm rem for decades, lots of deer met their match with that bullet, Obviously I'm not a fan of any vld bullet but 140 grain is more than enough for deer..
