I don't have the above combo in my reloading book.

Can someone share some book data for the 140 Berger VLD minimum and maximum powder charge for H1000?

I appreciate it in advance.

ravot22,

The book load is found at the Hodgdon Reloading Center online:

Hodgdon H1000
.284"
OAL = 3.250"

Minimum = 67.0
2,934 fps
46,200 CUP

Maximum = 70.0
3,036 fps
50,600 CUP

I understand that having a certain powder is reason enough to try to make it work in some instances.

Sometimes difficulty finding information for specific components is due to the fact that they are not necessarily recommended loads. In this instance above, the actual selection of H1000 leaves the load at a slightly lower level of performance due to the activity of the powder being slow.

Increased performance can be found using these 3 powders:

H-4831sc

IMR-7828ssc

Norma MRP

Accurate Magpro

Alliant Re-22

Slower, cooler powders:

Ramshot Magnum

VV N-160

VV N-165

And a slightly lesser amount of Hybrid 100V (slightly less than a full case)

Regards.

Try this. I found it from a friend. As always though, start low and work your way up. I've never shot the 140 gr VLD. However this sounds about right. I found my max load to be 70.5 gr with the 168 gr VLD, so this looks about right. Be safe and good luck.

140 Berger Match Grade VLD Hunting Hodgdon H-1000 66.0 gr starting @ 2836 fps

140 Berger Match Grade VLD Hunting Hodgdon H-1000 72.2 gr max @ 3144 fps

Ravot22,
We show a starting load of 66.0 grains. MAX is 72.2 grains. APPROX velocities = 2836 to 3144 fps. This is all based on a cartridge COAL of 3.290 in. Approximate fill ratio is 105% ( compressed at the 3.290 COAL). Read Erics article "VLDs making them shoot" in TECH TALK under the information tab on our homepage for seating depth testing information.
Take Care!
