I have a chance at a good deal on a Remington 700 in 6.8, 22" barrel. I'm thinking it might be a good whitetail rifle for my daughter. Anyone have an idea of the effective hunting range out of that length barrel?

It would depend on your velocity and bullet bc. I had 16" gas gun that I wouldn't hesitate to shoot a whitetail with at 250-300y. With your rifle, I would say 300y comfortably.

I have a Mini 14 in 6.8spc and it's performed very well out to 400yds. Put it where it needs to be and it will get the job done.

It is not a long range round but loaded with the Accubond it does a fine job at short to medium ranges.

300-350 yds its losing velocity to were bullet proformance is questionable.

With SSA OTM's and Accubonds I'm not seeing that as problem on deer, hogs, or coyotes.

Beyond 400yds though it's not a good choice for anything bigger than coyotes and it starts dropping like a rock.

Does anyone know if the Federal MSR rounds are safe to shoot in the 700?
