I found a old post from 2008 about a 416 RUM. I really like that idea necking up a 375 RUM. I have 300's and 338 RUM's. JE Custom commented several times on that post. I wonder what has changed in 10- years??? I shoot a 416 Ruger now and just love it but this would be a couple of notches up.

A buddy and I built one years ago to shoot rockchucks with. The bullets are too tough for rockchucks even if you drill them out to make big hollow points. I still have the reamer and brass in case I feel the need again.

Should make a "hellofa" big game cartridge. The potential negative, that I see, would be the availablity of brass! memtb

Run a 375 RUM over a 416 expander ball and viola. I have some 375 RUM brass I'd sell if you feel the need to have one.

I have had both the 416RM and 416 Rigby.
Boiled down to what rifle I liked best, so the Rem 700 went down the road and my custom CZ 550 Magnum stayed.
The RUM case would be able to get the same velocity at the same pressure as the Rigby, and maybe a little more if run at proper RUM pressures.
It would fall short if the Rigby was run to Weatherby pressures.

Cheers.

Love my 375 RUM...416 is getting perfect for the case capacity. I used a 416 rigby a good bit...took Grifaffe, Buffalo, and eland with it...a 416 works!

Here is a post on my 416 Buff that has lots of information.

https://www.longrangehunting.com/threads/416-buff.21003/

Just a few points for this round = it is a 375 Rum necked up to 416 nothing else. it pushes the 400 grain to 2700 ft/sec without pressure
And is one of the most accurate rifles I have. It shot my best group ever (.034 thousandths @ 100 yards with the 400 grain bullets and a 5 power scope),

It realy performs with the 350 grain Swift A Frame and can get very close to 2900 ft/sec velocity without pressure signs. I even tried the 325 grain barns and machined a 300 grain boat tailed Mono metal bullet for 3000 ft/sec+ but accuracy was not as good because of the twist rate

I have a 416 Rem Mag and at temps over 100o it gets a little dicey so the 416 buff was the answer to more velocity with less pressure.

Dave Manson made my reamer and it is not propitiatory, Hornady made a fine set of New dimension dies for it and I sized 200 cases with zero losses.

Hope this information helps you.

Thanks for your info. I would be using the Barnes 416 TTSX 350 gr. At 2,900 fps that would be awesome. My 416 Ruger node is 2,620 fps with the 350 gr TTSX. That custom shoots a ragged hole at a 100 yards and 1-9/16 group at 500 yards. But Nilgai on the coastal dunes at the King Ranch usually require a longer shot and a flatter trajectory with that awesome bullet would great. Even though we would not shoot at a critter that big tough past 500 your shot window for a spine or heart shot is small

If you want to shoot long range with a 416 of any kind I would shoot the Cutting Edge 340gr. They have a BC of .780 and they have data for a 40 Hart (aka 416 RUM) shooting them 2990fps. I have a customer of mine that shoots a custom 416 muzzle loader with that bullet and just sent me a text this weekend saying he had first round hits on steel out to over 1100yds and a 2nd round hit at over 1400yds.

Ed Brown also made a few 416 Ultras, Superior Ammo also loads for it...the cutting edge bullets generally like a bit more velocity and I agree the 340's are the way to go...great cartridge!

What powders are y'all using? In my other RUM's I use Retumbo. In the 375 Ruger and 416 Ruger I use Varget. I guess there is not any data for a 416 Ultra Mag

I've used both H414 and R17 in my 416 RUM with 400 a-frames and 340 CEB's. I push the a-frames at 2652 with single digit es and the 340's at 2982 again with single digit es. I've had the 340's over 3000fps and the 400's over 2700 but I settled on where the accuracy is. It is probably my most accurate rifle I own. I put an MBM 5-port beast brake on it and it is a pleasure to shoot. I got my dies from CH tool and die.
