Hey, I have a chance of getting a match barrel for my blaser r93 in .338rum. The barrel is 25" long, it seems a little bit to short far a 338rum? Do you think it would be worth changing for my .300 wm 25" barrel?
Is it gonna be some big difference to 1km?

Thanks, Tomaž

I don't think it would be worth the change.

25" isn't all that much short velocity could be pushed to nearly 2700 fps w/300 grain bullets.

Your Win Mag would be a bit flatter shooting and will, with heavier bullets, do anything the 338 will do.

Re: .338rum barrel length

Is a 25" barrel to short for a 338 RUM ? No. if you stick to 225s and 250 grain bullets. If you want
to shoot 300 grain bullets, 28 to 30" works better.

Is it worth the change? only you can make that choice. Look at the ballistics of both at your normal shooting distance and the rounds will tell you what to choose .

The 300 is at its best with 180 to 200grain bullets. The 338 will do the same velocity with 225s and 250grain bullets. Again it depends on what you need for the game and distance.

Not much help, but something to think about.

Roy... Have you been getting into the cupboard with all the glass bottles?:D

Run the ballistics of a 250 OTM at 3000 fps or Classic hunter compared to a 215 Hybrid at 2800fps.

.338 RUM
range drop wind energy
500 7.8 1.3
700 13.3 3.3
1000 23.2 5.1 1750 ft/lbs

300 win
500 9.6 2.5
700 16.2 3.7
1000 28.2 5.7? 1230 ft./lbs

But I suppose Roy is right. They will both put big holes in critters out to 1k. And one does it with a lot less recoil!

I have seen two 26" 300 wins in the last 2 months here that were right at or just over 2950 with 215 Berger Hybrids. 4100' ASL. My personal rifle with 28" tube sends them at 3035 fps. I would deduct 20 to 30 FPS per inch.

Just offering this for calculation comparisons.

As far as the choice between a 25" 300 and a 25" 338? To me it would depend on what I was going to hunt most. If it were elk most often, I would go 338. If it was deer, 300 win.

I have a 25.5" barrel on my .338 RUM.
95gn of H1000 with the 250gn Berger Elite, gets me 2950fps.
