I just picked up a 308 and working on some loads. I know Varget is a good choice, Has anyone tried H380 or Benchmark in the 308 165 br pills or 150gr pills. I have a lot of both powders so It would be nice to shoot one of them. What bullet do you guys reccommend, for Deer Antelope out to 5-600 yds

Thanks Dan

Hi Dan.

I have used V140 to good effect loaded to SAAMI spec or there abouts ...

My favorit load is 44 grains of Varget over a 155 Amax or 155 Scenar

I use RL15 for 175's to 155's, I Never had any luck with VARGET,But I know of good results others have had,I am an ALLIANT guy ..

I would skip H380. It is VERY temprature sensitive and it is hard to get small extreme spreads.

BENCHMARK has worked well for me in the past. RL-15 is a kick butt 308 powder. Currently I am running VV-N540 and dont think I will ever look back. The accuracy nodes are VERY wide and velocity is staggering. Running the 168 AMAX at 2823 with room for more. 2823 is where the best accuracy is. Regularly shoots in the .2's and .3's 3 AND 5 shot groups.

For up to 600 yard lope and deer bullets, I recomend either the 150 ACCUBOND, 150,168 Ballistic tip or the 168, 178 AMAX or 190 Berger, or the 200 SGK. The 200 SGK will get you out to 750 yards on game and do it ethically. That is in standard air. You could take her farther the higher in elevation you go. Ethically meening you will have reliable expansion and over 1000 foot pounds of energy left.

Welcome to the 308 world!
