300 win mag

So I found a used 300 win mag it's a weatherby mark V. The odd part is looks like an accumark but has a lighter colored stock and only a 23" barrel. Never seen one with that short of a barrel. Wondering if anyone would know if that can be the original barrel or a different one with the same contour.

Depends on price and condition. I have a lot of weatherby's.

Mark Vs have been made since 1959 and before. Conventional safety vs on bolt safety in those days.

So the variety and possible configurations is endless. Same as an R700. ;)

Without pictures I can't comment on the stock.

Chambered in 300 WM with a 23" barrel means it's not "as built" by Weatherby. No biggie.

If the price is good, by it as an action. If it shoots, keep it as a hunter.

Just like any "used" rifle. It's what it means to you.

As I recall, Weatherby did (does?) offer the Mark V in .300 WM, but as fseaman notes, not with a 23" barrel. At the very least it's had the barrel shortened.

You certain it's Win mag? Just checking...it wasn't real common for Weatherby to do non-weatherby calibers in Mark V...and certainly not 23".... definitely an odd ball

Does it say 300 Winchester magnum or just 300 magnum. If it's the latter, it's a 300 Weatherby Magnum.

According to the wiki page the Mark V has been offered in quite a few non Weatherby chambers. Agree though, 23" is an unusual length for just about any rifle mfg.

Still, careful reviewing of how the barrel is marked before shooting it seem prudent. Any doubt should result in a chamber casting being made.

Contact Weatherby with the serial number, they will tell you.

I was on my phone earlier so I couldnt give anything more detailed. As @K.E.C. Darkside said, contact Weatherby with the serail number. You can either call or email. They are very good about their records and they well tell you exactly how/when that rifle left the factory. I have several ones, with one going back to 1959 and they were able to give me the details.
I have 24" and 26" barrels but never heard of 23". It does not mean they din't make one, just that I never heard of it. The early Weatherby rifles just said "300 Magnum" as the 300 WM was not "invented" yet.
Posting pictures of both sides of the action will help members here offer better opinions, but nothing will be what you can get from Weatherby,

I have 20 or so Weatherbys;'
I could see the Weatherby factory from my house when I and they were in Paso Robles.
I used do drive by the factory when they were in Atascadero.
They used to come to my range for fun and R&D.
I used to go in to get parts for my Weatherbys direct at the factory.

Yes, they chamber for non-Weaterhby, have for a long time.

That said. That 23" barrel, they would never do that.

The OP has not provided pictures so I'm not sure where this is going.

Well if I could take pictures of it I would. It's at bass pro in the used guns sections. It's a real mark V action has everything that would be on a accumark barrel is the same profile just 3 inches short. Thanks for the info guys. Think I'll buy it and just get a new barrel.

Is it marked as "23 inches" or did you measure muzzle to bolt face to confirm 23"?
I wouldn't put it past a bass pro employee to measure/mark the barrel length incorrectly
