.30 GIBBS is finally ready ...

You know the 300 Win Mag is totally better right? And you can't even find loaded ammo for a 30 Gibbs! Plus my 308 gets the same velocities with half the powder and negative recoil forces. And then there's this other completely unrelated thing I want to talk about too...........

That's a good looking setup! I think the weight is just about perfect, I try for 8# scopes with my hunting guns. The scope intrigues me too. I'm curious to hear how it works out for you. I've never personally had a USO in my hands so I'm not familiar with them at all.

A local shop had a 30 Gibbs sitting on the used rack back before the world went sideways and I was really close to grabbing it. That got me thinking about having an Encore pistol barrel in 30 Gibbs. I haven't ruled out that project, so I'm anxious to see what sort of performance you end up getting out of this.

It looks like you've got a set of Whidden dies, did you stumble onto those in stock somewhere or did you order them?

You know .300 WM remains my go-to chambering. No loaded ammo? I am OK with that as I am not dependent on it. As soon as I get enough range time with the USO, I will let you know. The Whidden is for my .30 LARA. I have Redding dies for the .30 Gibbs.

feenix , yes the 300 win mag is the best 30 cal in the world but the 30 Gibbs will do the same thing without all the recoil and the animals will never never know the difference in 50 fps. and the range could be 1 " at 600 yards in other word they are the same even better than the comparsion of the 308 win to the 30/06.. again the 35 % sholder is a hell of an improvement. now you can do the same with a 270 win cases just neck it up to 323 338 or 358 going in steps from 308 first and fire form you know the 270 case is also 64 mm just like the 280 case you must have a ring to seat the head space thus the 323 338 or 358 neck dia before useing the 30 gibbs die.. if you want 280 brass from the 270 win you have to neck the 270 up to 323 then fire form in the 280 case and wham O you have 280 reming brass. never never fire 270 brass in a 280 without necking up to 308 ore 323 then back down to 280 with a headspace ring on the thing..

Do you have starting loads worked up for this? Quickload has the 30 Gibbs in their database. I can do a quick run if you like, maybe the 178gr or what bullet are you thinking to start with?

OK gibbs loading data 180 gr bullet with 64 gr Imr 4350 =3137 DO NOT use this it is too HOTTTTT.mabe start with 62 gr of reloader 22 or H-4831 and work up mabe 64 gr of Ramshot Magnum. with 200 gr bullet gibbs says 63 gr of 4350 at 2900 , again only use 61 grain of reloader 22 or H 4831. then if your primers are still round and no extractions marks on back of brass you can increas max 1 gr at a time. However you will find the sweet load for this wonderful calibre

Cool, thanks!

Awesome! I was going to start conservatively at 56g H4831SC for the 178.

Sorry, I do not know what the actual free bore with the standard reamer. Perhaps somebody else might answer that question. The barrel has a 1:10" twist. I have 215s and 230s but not the 245s. I know I can stabilize the 215s and 230s esp at my altitude but I will save the 215s and heavier for more suitable chambering like my .300 WM/WSM (215s) and .30 LARA (215s, 230s, and 245s).

The effective freebore should be between . 222 and .250. The AI version performs well at this freebore but only add 2 grains more case capacity with the 40o shoulder. They also have an unusual throat so this free bore length is greatly effected by the bullet design.

It was also intended to be able to shoot round nose bullets. the longer free bore helps keep the pressure under control.

I am a big AI fan, but in this case I believe you picked the best cartridge design. 👍

Ray Romain of Brockway Pa. (now deceased) was a gunsmith and a big fan of the Gibbs cartridges and had many of the Northern pa. long range hunters shooting the 30 Gibbs.

Have you gotten a fire form d capacity yet, there seems to be a couple numbers floating around?

I think there will always going to be a disparity between capacity claims esp. with the variety of brass and their manufacturing differences. This is going to one of those test data I hope to collect for comparison. Anyway, I measured one and I was getting 73.96g of H20. This is Hornady brass fire-formed with 11g of WSF only (COW method).
