30-06 over 308

You can't go wrong with a 30-06! It should be your first rifle....will handle anything from squirrels to Brown Bear. And yes I have hunted Squirrels with a 06 by tissue patching a #1 buckshot add a little Bullseye and you have supper. My Remington 700 BDL I bought I think in 1964 and would never sell it. Still original trigger and it never went off unloading. An added benefit is if you are out in the boonies hunting and whoops forgot you ammo at home, most Ma and Pa stores will carry 30-06. SOL if you shoot an exotic caliber

Between 308 and 30-06 i again say 30-06 yesterday after the silhouette match I broke out an old 1903 a3 2.5 weaver 168 grain factory ammo put 2 next to the x and one on white band around the x ring 10 ring if you will. I own 2 308's but they don't have the authority that the 06 has and the 06 will shoot with a worn out barrel and again you can always find a 308 later for a donor build when you get tired of it
Miss the silhouette matches. Lots of trigger time and great bunch of guys.

If looking at 280 AI or 7 SAUM you will need to compare are it to the Gold standard 7mm Rem Mag that all "new" .284" cal cartridges are inspired by. You can go bigger 28 Nos, 7 RUM, more custom 7 LRM, I think the 180 class bullet is hard to beat.

And for all the folks who forget their ammo it's just as available everywhere Iv seen as the'06

30-06 is the winner here! While the 308 is a very useful chambering, it cannot run with a properly
loaded 30-06. My 24" Vanguard will drive 180 Accubonds to just north of 2900, using Reloder 23.
I have owned quite a number of 308's over the years, but have always returned to the venerable
30-06. For the bigger animals that tend to be tenacious of life, I do favor some additional power
That is where my 308 Norma Mags or, best, my 8mm Rem Mag come into play. D.

The higher pressure limit of the 308 can meet or exceed the velocity of a 30-06 up to about 150gn, so the 30-06 only gives you an advantage of bigger bullets. I like the idea of staying with 30 cal bullets but I'd lean towards the 300wsm/wm/other to extend your velocity range.

A friend years ago left his ammo 1500 miles back home. The closest store was in a small town with a gas station and a cafe. The "Cook" was a reloader, shooter and shot a 30-06. He gave my buddy 50 rds and a free breakfast. At the end of the hunt we stopped and gave his wife a $100 tip. Showed him a big 4x4 buck and the grin on his face was priceless.

I just think it's lame to base your entire cartridge selection on the thought you will forget your ammo 😂 But then again people who do so probably should 😉

Hello all as title says I've been thanking about buying a Remington 700 adl in 30-06 to do my first semi custom rifle build and my question is is there really a need for a 30-06 if I already have 2 308s I do have everything but brass to load for a 30-06 but up to 175 grain bullets what can a 30-06 give me over my 308 for whitetailto elk.if I do not buy a 30-06 I will most likely try to find a 300 wm or 300 wsm. Thanks in advance
I use 3 rifles for most of my needs, 243 Winchester, 308 Winchester and 338 Winchester Magnum. These 3 cover 55 grain up to 300 grain bullets. As others have said the 308 and 30-06 are both great and are with in 100 fps of each other untill 180 grains. If you need bigger than that go 338. My first rifle was a 700bdl in 30-06 and was very accurate, I switched to 308 for the less recoil. My 338 wm has a muzzle brake and kicks about like my 243.

I would opt for at least a hinged floor plate on the Rem 700. As far as caliber 30-06 with 180 grain wins out over the 308 especially if you are handloading. The 30-06 has some very fast factory loads available now.
If you don't mind the extra recoil the 300 magnums give you more range. I have a 300 wsm which has accounted for several moose at over 400 yds but I have also shot quite a few moose with the 30-06 and 308 just at 300 yds or less. Remember the key is not to shoot more gun than you can shoot accurately 100% of the time.

Well, the way I look at it is; if you want a .308 Win that shoots heavier bullets better... build or buy a .30-06 Springfield. If you want a .30 06 Springfield that shoot's faster buy or build a .30 Magnum.
